Kadzo
received a $440 second payment.
"When I received the second transfer, I first opted to start a business that would serve as an income-generating source for my family. I did this because I was solely relying on making and selling charcoal. Not only is it a tiring activity but the trees for making the charcoals are nowhere to be seen nowadays. In that regard, I used $220 as capital for the shop business. To ensure that I do not run at a loss, I am selling fast-moving commodities such as foodstuff and personal effects. I am happy that I now have an income-generating activity that uses less strength compared to making charcoals.
Thereafter, I used the remaining amount to renovate my two-roomed mud-walled house. Since it was made of mud, it was not firm enough to withstand strong winds hence I saw it prudent to construct some pillars on the corners to make it firmer. The renovation materials like cement, ballast, and building sand plus the labor charge of the builder amounted to $300."

Katana
received a $25 sixth payment.
"Since I do not have any formal job. I had resolved to do a motorcycle taxi in order to earn a living. However, the income from this kind of business has been low hence I struggle to support my family. When I confirmed the receipt of my transfer, there was no food in my house. I, therefore, spent KES 1,200 on buying maize flour which has served my family for over two weeks. Because I had school fee arrears of KES 2,100 for my school-going children, I used KES 1,000 to pay part of their fees. I am glad that as they re-open schools today, they will have ample time to focus on their studies. The remaining KES 800 helped me to seek medication for my two youngest children who were feeling unwell by then. I am glad that they have tremendous improvements."

Mkutano
received a $440 second payment.
"When I got the second phase of the transfer, the first thing I did was buy three sacks of maize for KES 11400.00 to ensure that there is food security at home. This is because the time we were in was a dry season of food scarcity, and getting money was also a challenge. Secondly, I opted to complete my house, which I had started with the first transfer. Therefore, I bought 10 pieces of iron sheets for KES 11000.00 and the roofer charged KES 3500.00. As of now, I am very happy since my house is complete and operational. Sleeping in an iron-roofed house was just a dream and I did not see it coming to pass anytime soon, but GiveDirectly made the dream valid.
Being a father of four primary school-going children, I had some school fee arrears for my children. Including the current school fees by then, it amounted to KES 5500.00. Therefore, I cleared the whole debt despite the children being settled in school after talking to the administration. Thereafter, I bought three goats for KES 9000.00 to symbolize GiveDirectly at my home. I saved the remaining amount for the family's upkeep."
