How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a continuing goal. After utilizing the second transfer, I did not complete my aim thus aiming to accomplish it once I get some money. My main goal is to change my house from a mud-walled house to a block-walled house. I tried to renovate it but I only managed to fix blocks on the front part of the house and did pilars to the other sides to support it to make it more firm. From the shop business which I own and through the few savings which I make, I am optimistic about changing the whole house from mud to blocks.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is a unique organization that I have never come across. The cash transfers it did to the village people, changed our living status and our lives in general. I am happy because the GiveDirectly enabled me to get a source of income and also renovate my house to better. How I wish the program could come once again so that we could accomplish what we were unable to do. But all in all, as villagers, we are grateful for the support we received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I first opted to start a business that would serve as an income-generating source for my family. I did this because I was solely relying on making and selling charcoal. Not only is it a tiring activity but the trees for making the charcoals are nowhere to be seen nowadays. In that regard, I used $220 as capital for the shop business. To ensure that I do not run at a loss, I am selling fast-moving commodities such as foodstuff and personal effects. I am happy that I now have an income-generating activity that uses less strength compared to making charcoals. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount to renovate my two-roomed mud-walled house. Since it was made of mud, it was not firm enough to withstand strong winds hence I saw it prudent to construct some pillars on the corners to make it firmer. The renovation materials like cement, ballast, and building sand plus the labor charge of the builder amounted to $300.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was about to have my dinner at exactly 8 when I noticed that I had received my first cash transfer. I was overwhelmed with happiness and even confused because I never saw it coming. Also, I was so positive that I would achieve most of my goals. After sharing the news with my family they could as well not hold their joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For so many years I have been desiring to have a kitchen since my house was not spacious. Therefore I have been doing the cooking on my veranda and storing my properties under a huge tree. Also during the harvesting seasons, it was so hectic because my farm products would get stolen since I did not have a proper place to store them. I have therefore been experiencing loss all along. During the rainy season, I had to shift some of my properties to my friend's houses to avoid the damage. I have however wanted to construct the kitchen/granary for so many years but I could not afford to buy the materials needed. My spouse and I depend on low-paying jobs which can not even sustain our daily needs. I am so grateful that for now, I will not have to worry about the losses and the damages and do my cooking in a very pleasant place.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first cash transfer to buy building materials which include; iron sheets at KES 12000, poles at a total of KES 3200 nails and the labour charges of KES 3500. This was purposely for the construction of a kitchen which will also be serving as a store and a granary. To add to that I bought two mattresses worthy of KES 14000 which were to replace the traditional beds that we have been using for a couple of years. In addition, I bought bricks to renovate my house since it's also not that stable at all. Finally, with the amount of money that remained, I bought food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was recently married in a polygamous family, and i have two children with my husband. He works as a motorbike taxi, while i remain at home to take care of our livestock. Upon receiving the cash transfer of 55,000 ksh, i plan to buy 5 goats which will cost me 4000 ksh each. The remaining transfer i will use it to buy two beds and mattresses for myself and my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
All our entire family are in good health condition and we thank God for the blessings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently we are facing hard time, as a result of drought, it has not rained for better part of last year. We cannot do farming, and the cows have nothing to feed on. We purely depend on cattle for survival, because we sell milk, on a daily basis but now we are forced not to milk them because, nothing comes out of them.
