"Since I do not have any formal job. I had resolved to do a motorcycle taxi in order to earn a living. However, the income from this kind of business has been low hence I struggle to support my family. When I confirmed the receipt of my transfer, there was no food in my house. I, therefore, spent KES 1,200 on buying maize flour which has served my family for over two weeks. Because I had school fee arrears of KES 2,100 for my school-going children, I used KES 1,000 to pay part of their fees. I am glad that as they re-open schools today, they will have ample time to focus on their studies. The remaining KES 800 helped me to seek medication for my two youngest children who were feeling unwell by then. I am glad that they have tremendous improvements."

"After utilizing the second transfer as per my plans, I developed another goal that I aim to accomplish. If I get some money, I want to fix tap water at my home. Currently, Freshwater is pricey and we have to move a longer distance to get it. Based on that, I developed a goal of fixing the same to reduce the cost of traveling since I have to hire a motorbike to fetch the water. Once I have a freshwater tap at home, it will be an opportunity for me to start a shop business because the ones who will be coming to fetch water will also require some items like personal effects and foodstuff." "I am a mother of one working as a subsistence farmer while my husband is a motorcycle taxi driver. Meeting our basic needs is the biggest challenge we usually face because my husband's income that we rely on is unsustainable. In the last three months, I used a portion of my transfers to buy building materials worth KES 1400 that I intend to use to expand my house. We live in a small house that does not grant us the luxury of enjoying spacious and comfortable accommodation making us experience low self-esteem whenever we have visitors. I also bought enough food worth KES 4000 for the family which cushioned us against hunger."

"The transfers have been of great help and I thank God because it would not have been easy without the support. I bought a motorcycle on credit. Unfortunately, it was recently impounded because I failed to pay the weekly KES 2500 to service the debt leaving me with no reliable source of income. I have therefore, devoted KES 2200 of the monthly transfers to purchase cornflour and KES 800 for boosting my spouse’s business. She prepares and sells chapatis and currently, this is our main source of income. The prices of food commodities have gone up and if it was not for GiveDirectly then raising my family of five would have been a challenge." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"In addition to my three family members, I support my father to take care of my five siblings who are all in school. I repair motorcycles to earn a living but the KES 200 I make from it daily can not sustain all of our needs. There are times when I do not get a single customer which means that I take nothing home. My father is aged, and he can not do much and thus he makes little money from his construction work. To improve my income, I bought both a goat and two chickens for rearing worth KES 3200 with the hopes of benefiting from them in the future after they reproduce. KES 5800 I spent on foodstuffs that can sustain us for some period, especially with the current famine that has led to hike in the prices of most of the food commodities. I am not yet in a position to comfortably meet all of our needs but I appreciate the support and I believe that things will work out with time."
