"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a 3,000 litres water tank. We used to walk for more than 4km to collect the clean water for drinking and for domestic used. This was so tiresome and time consuming. Because of our old age it was so stressful and very demoralizing. We were also being exposed to water related diseases since the water was not clean. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and we decided with my spouse to purchase a water tank. Current we have plenty water for all our work at home and we give our goats to drink and even spray our vegetables. We are no longer exposed to water related diseases. We have saved time to work on our farms. We are so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard to be much better than before."

"Receiving this money means a house for me. This is a very big opportunity for me to build a house. As the house is small, this money will be used to build a bigger house with ironsheets. I will also use the money to buy goats but not for business, I just want them for food."

"Receiving this money will mean water security for my family. We live in an arid area and it doesn't rain often. I have 5 children living with me while one has his own family. Because they are in Scholl it means my wife has to go fetch water to be used at home at a local stream. The stream is about 5km from our home and the terrain is hilly. She has to do this everyday and it's exhausting to her, that is why this money will help us in purchasing a big water tank worth KES 20,000. The water tank will be used to store rain water collected from our iron roofed house when it rains, the water can also be fetched just once in a week, stored to be used for a whole week. This will save us from walking for a distance everyday to collect it. The remaining amount of the transfer I'll use to pay school fees for my children and buy a dairy cow and 2 goats that will serve as future investments."

"This money means that I will be able to solve some of the problems I have been facing. My house is thatched with grass which I have to change often. When I receive this money, I will buy iron sheets which will be used as a new roof for my house. On top of that, I will buy goats to raise. I am certain that I will sell them in future to make money. In addition to that, I will buy maize. I have a farm but I did not harvest enough maize because I lacked fertilizer to apply to the maize this year. As such, yields were low."

"I am a widower and have been living alone for the last 15 years. I have a family of two boys who are now independent. Before my wife died, I used to work at Fort Jesus( a historical site in Mombasa) selling sea shells to tourists. However, the business collapsed and my boss fired me. Consequently, I had to come back home in 2018. Since then, I have been depending on clearing bushes for other people as they prepare to cultivate their land. Through this job, I only earn at most 1500 KES depending on the size of the land. This job is not reliable since our village is experiencing longer periods of drought. I have also stayed for long without being paid after clearing the bushes for those people. As we speak, I have someone who has not paid me close to two years now. This has made life more difficult for me. I intend to use the cash transfer to buy 10 goats that I will sell when they multiply to earn an income. I will also use the second cash transfer to take my second born to college."

"Receiving this money means good health, good education for my children and livestock production for me. For the past three years, I have been having health complications. I experience alot of pains in my thorax. My breasts swell and become painful especially during the night. This whole thing makes me very unhappy. I am planning to set aside the first transfer for my whole diagnosis process and medication. For the second transfer, I will set aside 10,000 KES for my two children's education. They are still in primary school. Due to the issue of drought in this area, I am planning to venture into livestock production. Crop production comes with so many loses due to the unreliable rainfall. I am intending to use a total of 15,000 KES to buy five goats. Goats can survive in this climate. In the future, the goats will have increased in number and I will sell them and earn an income. I will then use the remaining amount of money to buy foodstuffs."

"Receiving this money means a decent life, good education for my children and food security. I am planning to use 30,000 KES to buy 3 beds and 3 mattresses. One bed for me, one for my son and the other one for my 3 daughters. This is because we have been sleeping on the floor with traditional mats for about 5 years. Due to the failed rainfall, we have failed to produce maize in our farms, this has made it difficult in the provision of food for my family of 6 children. To cover up for this problem of food insecurity, I am planning to buy 10 goats at a total cost of 25,000 KES. Once the goats grow and even increase in number, I will sell them at around 4,000 KES per goat. I wil use this income to buy foodstuffs. I am also planning to use 5,000 KES to clear school fees arrears for my 5 children and use 5,000 KES to pay for the next term fees. For the rest of the money, I will use it to buy food and sort other family needs as they arise. Needs such as medical bills."

"The transfer from GiveDirecly has changed my family's lives for the better. A few months ago, my wife, two children and I lived in sad conditions. Our house was small and falling apart due to bad weather conditions. Its iron sheets were so worn out and so the leaf would leak whenever it rained. I was constantly worried about our safety. Since I was unemployed, I had no money and could not afford to change our living conditions. Once we received the transfer from GiveDirecly, things changed. I have been able to complete the construction of a new, spacious and comfortable house. I also plan on purchasing ten goats, which can be exchanged for oxen much later. With the oxen, I will work on people's farms to earn money and provide for my family's basic needs."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer and two goats. I had always wished to own livestock project but I didn't had money to start this project. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. I didn't had an extra income to buy the dairy cow. I run a small shop, the profit that I get is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I was not able to save some money. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because I knew I would fulfilled my dreams. Currently I have a heifer and I know I will get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I have two goats for a start. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."
