How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal has been to buy a piece of land and I am glad that I have already done an investment that I will use to achieve this. Currently, I aim to look for money that I will use in building a house so that I can relocate and start doing some investment knowing that I will never leave that place. Since I was able to put into action good farming practices, I am optimistic of a good harvest and I will sell part of it and use the money to achieve my goal of building a house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In life, I have lived knowing that no one can ever give anyone financial aid of such an amount, not even your sibling or parent. GiveDirectly did a noble job by not only deciding to give us financial aid but by also making it unconditional and not expecting anything in return.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother and I do not have a piece of land since I was given a portion by my parents to build a house where I can live with my children. As a lady, I have always lived knowing that it will reach a time when I will be expected to move out and look for a place of my own. When GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I decided that I would spend the transfer to purchase a piece of land. Because of this, I bought a dairy cow worth KES 30000 since the prices of land increased when people heard that transfer from GiveDirectly had been sent. I will later sell it and use the money to achieve my goal once the prices of land will have subsided. In addition, I spent KES 15000 on farming by hiring a tractor for land preparation and planting purposes and also bought quality hybrid seeds and fertilizers. I spent the remaining KES 7000 on food and other basic needs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. It was around 9am when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I was doing my daily morning chores. I reluctantly check it. I couldn't believe my eyes, I have never received such amount of money before. I had to confirm this by checking the Mpesa balance. I felt so overwhelmed with joy. I knew I would be able to achieve my goals. I immediately inform my family members and they celebrated with lots of joy. I went to withdrew the money the same day and planned on how to spent it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer and two goats. I had always wished to own livestock project but I didn't had money to start this project. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. I didn't had an extra income to buy the dairy cow. I run a small shop, the profit that I get is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I was not able to save some money. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because I knew I would fulfilled my dreams. Currently I have a heifer and I know I will get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I have two goats for a start. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to purchase a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months. This will enable me to cut the daily cost of buying milk. I also purchased two goats as an investment. Goats reproduce twice per year and it really helps whenever there is an emergency. I added stock to my business of retail shop. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to build a home for myself. I currently live on my parents land but as single parent,I need to find my own. I will buy land and build a house at about 600 USD. I will also build better house for my parents as a way of showing gratitude. I also run a small business pedling household items in the village. I will use about 100 USD to boost the it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is when I wake up to a new day , with new opportunities. My client's come very early to buy household items that they need for their breakfast. I enjoy serving them as this means that also get some good proceeds, enabling me to meet my own household's needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I face is lack of a reliable source of income. This is because crops have always been failing because of poor weather conditions in this location, and also due to poor timing as I lack money to buy inputs on time. My small business has also not done well because of lack of finance to buy enough stock for my business.
