"I spent part of my transfer on buying a cow. I resolved to buy the cow because in the near future it will help me as it reproduces and increase in number. I will be getting milk to sell thus earning an income. My son had completed his course but his certificate was being held due to fee arrears I had not cleared. Thus I took KES 9000 to clear the fees for my son to be given his certificate. This will enable him to look for employment with his certificates. I also renovated my house which was in a state of collapsing due to the many cracks and its roof dilapidated. I bought some iron sheets and nails and building poles to rebuild the house. I also paid for the labour cost."

"I spent a bigger portion of the first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, building poles and nails to construct a new house. Initially, I was staying in a grass thatched hut. I am happy that very soon I will have my new iron roofed house completed and move in. In addition to this, I also spent part of the transfer on buying a new bed and a mattress to replace the old beddings that I have been using for a long time. At least I now enjoy a comfortable sleep at my old age. The old rags were not good even for my health at my age. I spent the remaining amount to buy foodstuffs and meeting other households needs."

"I spent part of the first transfer on buying goats to keep in my homestead. These are assets to me that I can readily rely on in case of a financial need as they multiply. I am also renovating my old house because its roof is dilapidated and leaking during rains. I bought some building materials which include iron sheets, nails and timber to rebuild the roof. I saved the remaining amount to help me in starting an income generating activity. I am planning to open a shop from which I will be getting some profits."

"I was in the process of building a new permanent house. I did not have enough money to finish the construction of the new house. Through the transfer, I bought the additional building materials which include additional 20 pieces of iron sheets and timber for roofing, and cement and sand for plastering it. I also paid for the labour cost involved in the construction of my new house. Its almost complete now, I am currently finishing the floor. Having a permanent house has been my dream and I am grateful to GiveDirectly for helping me fulfill it. Finishing my house is the biggest difference in my daily life."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now living in a decent iron roofed house with my children. My previous house was very small and was in a bad state. Its roof was dilapidated and leaking whenever it rained. Through the transfer, I managed to build the new house. I bought pieces of iron sheets, building poles, nails and timber to facilitate its construction. Had I not received this financial support, I would still be living in that shanty old house."

"Receiving this money would mean a decent house for us. The house we currently have is grass-thatched with a leaky roof. My children can hardly sleep on cold and rainy nights. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March of this year 2020, I had some savings which I was intending to use to build a house. I lost my job and we were forced to spend the savings to buy food. I am thankful to GiveDirectly for this help because we shall soon be living in a better shelter."

"Receiving this money means good health for my family and i. My husband has been sick for the past 4 years he hardly does any chores. I am the one who goes out to farm or do some casual labour for us to eat. Getting this money will maje a huge difference as due to our health state we need good food and medical care. Our house roof blew up last month and thats another issue we would want to use our money for. These funds will surely change our lives."

"I spent 400USD on timber which will act as a replacement wall for three roomed 30 Iron roofed semi permanent house. This because nowadays in my place there is scarcity of house smearing mud and timber is more durable.I spent 60 USD on clothing because I had only pair of clothing meant for occasions.I had worn it for a long time therefore one could easily identify me by clothing even from a far. With the new clothing I now more decent, fashionable and very happy."

"I spent 250USD of my transfer on building a two roomed house because initially I had a grass thatched roof which was built forty years ago and I have lived there since my youth. 20USD on maize and beans seeds because it's planting season and bean seeds are short season crops hence will be a source of food for my family. I spent 80USD on six bags of maize as a source of food for my family because in order to work you have to do eat well in order for your mind to stabilize. I spent 100USD on my own clothing and wife's clothing and the rest I have saved for school fees payment when school reopen in the next season."
