Jumaa
received a $433 second payment.
"I have been staying with my wife for the last three years, but I hadn’t yet finished paying for her dowry. When I received the second transfer, I gave $200 to my in-laws. I added four goats worth $120 to my flock since I am a livestock farmer. The bed and mattress which we have been sleeping on with my wife and one kid were worn out, hence I replaced them with new ones worth $150. The remaining cash I used to purchase food and other household stuff which were missing."

Jumaa
received a $28 ninth payment.
"During enrollment, I planned to use most of my transfers to buy livestock and let them reproduce to accumulate wealth. Instead, I have been spending most previous transfers on food for my wife and two children. This is because my motorcycle riding business has not been performing well given the low population in my village, most of whom barely afford the service. The most I make on a good day is $3 which is not enough for food given the high cost of living. That is why I have been digging into the cash transfers for more food. However, this time, I directed most of the transfer toward agriculture given the rains that have recently blessed our land. I spent $12 on maize seeds and pesticides and paid laborers $10 to help prepare my acre of land. Am happy that the crops have sprouted now and I look forward to a healthy harvest a few months from now. At least, having enough food will allow me to embark on actualizing my goal of livestock rearing through the transfer. As a norm, I spent the remaining amount on food."

Risper
received a second payment.
"A large chunk of the funds went to adding a bedroom to the already existing house we had. It was in dire need of a make over, and the funds from GiveDirectly allowed me to do so. Part of the balance went to sourcing and securing a second hand motor bike, with which my husband could ply his trade of being a bodaboda operator. With my husband working on a bodaboda and myself working as a seamstress, sewing Kitenge and the likes for people, money is tight and we would have been hard pressed to accomplish all we did with the funds. Thrifting for the kids clothes, buying food stuff for the house and paying school fees were the other main priorities handled by the funds. My eldest is in Mariani Primary School, and just completed Grade 1, at KES. 1,000 per month. My youngest will be joining Grade 1 at the same school when they resume. I charge KES. 1,000 for an adult Kitenge and KES. 500 for a kids one, while my husband makes between KES. 300 to KES. 500 on a day, depending on customer traffic. If it were not for GiveDirectly it's safe to say we would have been looking at years before we would have ever accomplished what they have enabled us to do as a family, in mere months. We are forever grateful to GiveDirectly"

Hinzano
received a $433 second payment.
"When I received the first transfer, I bought a motor bike but I did not manage to pay for it completely. From the second transfer I spent $100 to clear off the balance. The bike has been a great source of income for our family since on a good day, I can make at least $5-$10 from ferrying people from one place to another. I have always wanted to have my own house, thus I was able to accomplish this dream by using $400 to construct a house. This means that we now have a decent place for shelter with my family. The remaining $30 I used to purchase enough foodstuffs to sustain our family for quite sometime."

Zawadi
received a $433 second payment.
"It was a great blessing having GiveDirectly visit and support our village right from the first to the last transfer. In my opinion, this initiative gave a new face to every household and more so the whole village. we were given a chance to listen to and decide whether to receive and spend the transfer independently without any push but ensuring that they change our lives or not. The fact that the support was only limited to the two transfers made every household spend wisely following the teachings we had received during enrollment stages. I can't see anything to complain about but to just encourage GiveDirectly to keep supporting other villages as well."

Thomas
received a $28 ninth payment.
"The year before last year, I managed to acquire a motorcycle on loan. The owner of the bike and I agree that I will pay him in installments over the years until I finally settle the debt. I have so far managed to pay more than half of what I owe, and I want to ensure that by the end of the year I am finally done with the payment. I also want to save up my money so that I can finally buy livestock. My intention is to take care of the livestock and breed them, and then finally I can sell them and build a better house for me and my family."

Zuleah
enrolled.
"My husband lives in Garissa town where he works as a motorcycle taxi rider. He rarely visits us at home due to the nature of his job; he has to physically work to be able to earn. Sometimes it might even take up to seven months before he shows up. As a married woman, my genuine happiness depends on these visits and the last one was two months ago. I can't just express how joyous that felt!"
