"The goal when I receive the transfers is to start a shop and a grocery business so that I have an income-generating activity. It will enable me to earn a profit of KES 300 a day which is sufficient for a family of 5 members s. In a day I require KES 200 for food and water. Besides, I will use a portion of the transfers to buy 4 indigenous goats which do well in our area due to hot weather conditions. As they multiply, I will sell at a profit and use the proceeds to pay for schools fees and stationary. Once I realized this objective, I will be fascinated because I will have a regular source of money."

"I sleep on a mat that is tattered and my bed is also in a poor condition. Receiving this money means using 8,000 KES to buy a 4 by 6 mattress and a 4 by 6 bed. I will also use the remaining amount to buy goats so that I can do away with burning charcoal as I am old and cutting down trees needs a lot of energy."

"Receiving this money means continued education for my children. This I plan to achieve by starting a kiosk shop. I will spend KES 40000 to start the business and I am assured of getting a profit of KES 500 per day. I will then use the proceeds for school fees, uniforms, stationery, etc. I will further spend KES 25000 to renovate my house which is leaking during rainy seasons. I will use the rest of my transfers to buy indegious goats that will act as a long-term investment project for my family since I do not have any."

"I am a temporary peasant farmer growing maize and peas for my household consumption. Due to the dry weather conditions in our area, farming is no longer productive for me. I have desired to practice livestock farming, but due to lack of money, I have been struggling to achieve my dream. With this money, I can comfortably buy 10 goats for KES 30000. Goats farming is better especially in semi-arid regions compared to keeping cows. Therefore, receiving this money will mean a reliable source of income for me."

"My spouse lost his eyesight a year ago but since we could not afford a specialized optician, we had to learn to live with the fact that he would stay in that condition forever. With the first transfer, we spent 20000 KES on his medication. We have seen a great improvement. He can now see, walk on his own and do almost all the basic things own. I feel relieved of the burden since I no longer play the role of both a nurse and the main income earner. 10500 KES I paid for my son's secondary school fees to clear the balance he owed the school. He had stayed at home for the fee for quite some time, and I am glad the money came on time. His performance for that term improved because he was able to attend all the lessons. I also bought two goats at 5000 KES for rearing. They not only act as a remembrance of the Give Directly project, but they are an investment because in the future after they will have given birth then I will have more goats that I can comfortably sell to meet urgent needs. Out of the remaining 19000 KES, I bought a mattress worth 9000 KES so that I could replace the old worn out we had and used 10000 KES to purchase a stock of foodstuffs for my household members."

"I own a shop in the town center, I have less stock due to limited capital. Receiving this money means a business boost, I intend to use the entire first transfer to increase my stock to serve all my local customers well. With the second transfer, I will start a project of buying and selling goats. I have seen they can survive during the drought season, so they will be the best in terms of investments. Profit from my businesses will help me renovate my house and pay school fees for my grandchildren. I am happy that this project came to our village."

"I am a widow with 6 children under my care, we share the same structure. I intend to build a three-roomed temperament house which can accommodate all of us. I will buy five goats as future investments for my children. I cook in the same structure I sleep in, this has made me prone to diseases. I intend to build a new cook place so that I can save the money I was using to go to the hospital. I am happy to receive this aid."

"With my transfers I ensured I began buying the right material so that I could finally start building my house. Apart from the reasons I mentioned which included heavy rains that left the house full water due to the fact that the roof had holes all over and needed renovation, I also wanted my house, that I would own and I have my privacy because we had been living together with my co-wives for over a decade. Using the first transfers I bought most material which included timber and iron sheets. So with the second transfers I managed to pay the labourer who worked on my house KES 15,000. I also wanted to grow my farm by adding a few more livestock so that when they produced I could offer them up for market, so I bought four goats at KES 15,000. I also looked into matters concerning nutrition where I spent over KES 5,000 by buying maize and taking to the mill to turn into flour. Lastly I suffer from diabetes and I have been seeking medication and visiting the hospital which has cost me over KES 3,000 because I visit every now and then."

"Improving the standard of my living is generally what receiving this money means to me. Currently, I managed to construct a 1 roomed house that at the moment is small to accommodate us. I have desired to expand it, also to reinforce it with stones and cement but this has remained an unfulfilled dream due to lack of money. With this cash grant, I am very optimistic about realizing this desire since I intend to spend my entire first transfer to offset this top priority. The other transfer will aid in starting livestock keeping, especially goats to have a long-term investment plan for my children."

"I spent KES 5,000 on purchasing a goat. This is my investment because goats reproduce faster and help in case of emergencies. I have always wished to start goats rearing projects but I did not have the money. I spent KES 10,000 to complete the construction of the house that I had started using the first transfer. I am so grateful because now I have a better and more spacious house. I lived in a small house that could not host all my family members comfortably. I spent some amount on medication for my child who was feeling unwell. Currently, she is feeling better and is still under medication. I bought food and other household items which we were lacking at that particular time. I saved some amount for school fees for my children who are in various schools. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and enabled us to fulfill our dreams."
