How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The main goal that I have at the moment is to support the educational needs of the children from primary up to college level. This is because I have great hope for my children to change our living conditions by giving them a quality education. My biggest worry is to see them frequently sent home due to the lack of school fees
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in spending direct cash through mobile money to poor households in the community. Including everyone in the program without exclusion based on ethics is something that they did well. Moreover being able to get the chance of being one of the beneficiaries is what I am grateful for. Also, everything went well and I do not see anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 9000 to pay part of the fee arrears for my 4 children. My 3 children are in primary school and one had just completed her secondary school and is yet to get her results due to the huge fee balance. At the moment I am relieved and enjoying peace of mind seeing them learning without their education interrupted. Furthermore, I invested KES 7000 in starting livestock rearing by purchasing two goats. Goats rearing is an activity that I have yearned to engage in because it's easy to do and very profitable. This will be a future investment that will assist me in advancing the education of the children since I am planning to sell them once they reproduce. I also bought modern and proper bedding for KES 5500. Earlier, I was using small, traditional threads bed and old mats as bedding which was not comfortable resulting in body pain after sleep. With the remaining cash, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for my family of 5 members since we are experiencing drought and famine in our area.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On this day, I had just arrived at my workstation ready to start my day. I got a message and upon checking, I saw that I received funds from give directly. I was happy and filled with so much gratitude toward the organization. I continued with my work and in the evening when I went back home, I shared the great news with my daughter who took me to withdraw it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being the sole breadwinner of the family, it has been quite a struggle to pay my children's school fees. But because of the funds I received from give directly, this has now been history. As they are rarely sent home due to arrears. Their studies are progressing effectively and this I believe will affect their performance positively.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Two years ago, after the passing away of my husband, I moved back to my mother's house. We stayed together up to May last year when she left us to be with the lord leaving her house to me. However, there was no kitchen. When I got the funds from give directly, I started by building a kitchen. I then settled my 5 children's school fees arrears of KES 7000. After which I bought a goat its kid at KES 4,000. I later bought two mattresses at KES 11500. the amount that remained, I used to purchase some food for my children and I.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow with 6 children under my care, we share the same structure. I intend to build a three-roomed temperament house which can accommodate all of us. I will buy five goats as future investments for my children. I cook in the same structure I sleep in, this has made me prone to diseases. I intend to build a new cook place so that I can save the money I was using to go to the hospital. I am happy to receive this aid.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My second-born child did his primary education final exam last month. The result came out and he was among the top candidate in the sub-county. This brought joy to my life because he got sponsors for his secondary education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not having a stable source of income is the challenge I am currently facing, I work at a quarry where it's prone to diseases but I don't have any other option but to work there. We get KES 2500 per month which is insufficient to cater to my needs ( pay school fees, food, and medical bills. I have to visit hospitals for check-ups every week because of the harsh working environment.
