Dama
received a $534 initial payment.
"I have been living in a small, old temporary house for quite a long time and I have been planning on building a better structure. As if God listened to my prayer, He sent Give Directly with this aid. I am currently in the process of making bricks from sand and cement. Through these transfers, I have bought 23 bags of cement and a few tonnes of sand. I have also bought some pieces of iron sheets and all these are geared towards putting up a semi-permanent house. Now I am confident that my plan will come into reality. I am spending the rest of the transfer to meet my family's basic needs and other household items. Receiving this money has ensured that I am in a position to buy enough water for both our household use and for brick making process especially now that we have an acute water shortage. I am so proud of Give Directly."

Jared
received a $22 sixteenth payment.
"I expect my life to be different in the next six months is to buy a water tank. This is because during the dry seasons we struggle to get water and in most cases, we are forced to go for long distance to get water. I know when I buy the tank, I will never struggle again for water in the dry seasons."

"I currently live in a grass-thatched house which when it rains, the rainwater seeps through and we get rained on to extend where my important documents are destroyed. My goal, therefore, is to start saving some part of the monthly transfer with the aim of buying iron sheets to renovate my house with."

"Receiving this money means building a new house since the one my family and I currently live in is too old and leaks in water whenever it rains. I will then buy water tanks that will be of great use to me during rainy seasons since i will be able to connect gutters to harvest rain water. Adding one dairy cow to my herd is also part of my plans upon receiving this money"

"When I wake up in the morning, I clean my compound and leave to fetch water from a water pan which is five kilometers away from my home because the ones nearby have dried up. When I am back home, I feel much exhausted but I take my time to rest and start preparing my day's first meal. In the evening, my daughter would have come home from her place of work and she assists me in doing the household chores, something that gives me much time to rest. Therefore, I consider evening as the happiest part of my day."

"I always spend the better part of my day at home owing to the fact that, I am a house wife. My routine work is to fetch water from a water pan which is almost five kilometers away from my home. When I am back, I feel so exhausted and hungry but still I am forced to stay without food up to lunch hours where I prepare my first meal. In the evening, I feel happy since we usually get our dinner together as a family. Therefore, I consider evening as the happiest part of my day."

"My community is located in an ASAL area from which during drought suffers a fair share of adversities. Livestock is the major backbone of the economy and livelihood of our people. When drought strikes, we are forced to walk for miles to look for pasture and water for their survival. Some of them succumb to starvation and drained energy along the way. During such times, milk production rapidly plummets leading to malnutrition and children dropping out of school thanks to lack of source of income. Life is totally disrupted during this season. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. "

"I live in a small house with only one room and my children are growing up very fast. This means that soon I will need a bigger house with more rooms.I am therefore planning to spend my first transfer on building a one bed roomed house made of iron sheet roof. The roof will help me collect water during the rainy season.I will also buy a dairy cow which will provide milk for my children and surplus for sale.I will use the second transfer to start a grocery business. This will save me from the casual labour I often do which is very tasking and tiresome."
