"Due to hike in food prices and lack of casual jobs, I had been unable to support my family as I desired since I am a jobless widow. Throughout my life since the demise of my husband, I have been making and selling charcoal, a business that generates very minimal income. However, in order to ensure that life moves on, I am at times forced to buy food on credit. Immediately I received the transfer, I spent part of it to pay off debt of KES 500 while KES 1500 was used to buy additional food. I also used KES 1,000 to support the education of my 14 years old lame daughter."

"Receiving this money means food security for me. I am a 73-year-old widow. Charcoal burning is my occupation. Unlike before when I could make 6,000 KES, I can barely make 2,000 KES per month currently. This is attributed to my old age. The low income translates to struggles in providing myself with food because the food prices are increasing day by day. I am planning to purchase 5 goats at 3,000 KES each. Having a source of income from goat production will cushion me from food insecurity. By selling the goats and their products ( milk and meat), I will be able to sufficiently buy food for myself."

"The tough economic times have really made it difficult to make economic progress. Whenever I make long term plans, things change within a short time. For example, I had a plan of expanding my house but recently the market prices for building materials have spiked. My family is growing bigger hence the need for a bigger house. I have a business that I recently started and I am still crossing fingers because it has not stabalized yet. Those are just but a few of my worries."

"Towards the end of November last year when we had rain, my business was doing very well because vegetables were easy to find at reasonable prices. This made me happy and joyous since I was able to help my spouse with some of the responsibilities in the house."

"I contributed part of my transfer towards the purchase of food stuffs for my family. This I did due to fact that my mother lacks a reliable source income, and whatever the wages she earns are low to meet the increasing prices of essential commodities. We consider being in the GD program as God's divine intervention for us. We there pooled part of our transfer and spent them on buying a dozen of 2kg maize flour at KES 1,400. In addition, I spent the remaining transfer on buying a black polythene which I used to cover part of my house roof because it had been leaking during rainy seasons."

Zawadi received a $462 second payment.
"After receiving and withdrawing the money, I bought a modern bed and a mattress on the very day before returning home. This is because the bed I had was the traditional one tied with ropes and the ropes were worn-out. Both the mattress and the bed cost KES 9200.00. Thereafter, I bought construction materials for building a new house since the one I had was a grass-thatched and it was also leaking. I bought poles, rafters, nails and 20 iron sheets. The prices for these materials I cannot recall them."

"Before I begun receiving my transfer, I was almost giving up on the business I had been running for years, selling livestock. I had been lacking some cash to invest in the business for it to bloom. I am delighted that as a result of the transfer, I have learned that I can be able to effectively run it again. In addition, the proceeds from that business will enable me to buy food for my family. Previously I had not been having sufficient food because I did not have money to buy some due to inflation in food prices."

"I am a homestay mum because I do not have a job. I fully depend on my husband who works as a motorcycle rider. Due to the shortage and high prices of fuel, my husband has been unable to work for the past two weeks. Because of this, he has been struggling to meet our daily needs (food). I decided to sell a goat to get money and buy food for the family (wife and 1 child) but I was not successful. Together with my family, we slept hungry for most of the days. Upon receiving my transfer, I bought 12 packets of maize flour and some 2 Kg of sugar. The food I bought eased the tough situation I was in and I am happy that we had something to eat."

"All my children have two pairs of clothes. Three are schooling though only one has a pair of uniforms. They have always been requesting me to buy them school uniforms but the money I get through making charcoal is never enough. At times we sleep hungry or take only one meal for the whole day as I lack money to buy food. Currently, the prices of maize flour have been hiking making it more difficult to put food on the table."
