How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have grown up admiring being financially stable and independent. My goal is to open a grocery. I am planning to sell one of my goats and start with a capital of $50, which would be enough to buy different vegetables. I intend to start small and gradually increase my stock with the demand of my customers. The business will be my retirement plan from the charcoal burning business and also a source of my daily income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The transfers have brought a big difference in my life. I have lived with frustrations on how to support my family. My family used to live in a thatched house that was almost collapsing, but the funds have improved my living standard and I could afford to build a two-roomed house. Food was a major challenge, and the funds helped me manage the issue for a few months as I embarked on my usual job. I am grateful because, with the goats that I bought, I can still open up a business that will support my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother of five children, living with my parents. I have been working with my parents in the charcoal-burning business to sustain my family. When I moved back home, they forced me to live in a grass-thatched house which is one-roomed and not in good shape. The biggest challenge I am going through is supporting my children as single parents without a stable job. As soon as I got the first transfer, I executed my plan, which was to buy building materials enough for a two-roomed house with a verandah. The little that remained I used to buy three goats and a mattress because my children were sleeping on a mat. I spent my second transfer of $200 on the construction of the house and the labor. Another $200 was used to buy food in bulk, which would last our family of eight members for the next two months. The remaining amount was used to buy my family some new clothes and $40 was used to pay school fees for my three children in school

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 Pm and I was checking my phone. I got a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately informed my mother who was at home., We all celebrated because that was the highest amount we have ever received. I knew I would be able to invest in livestock farming. I stayed for four days planning with my family. I am grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have started a goat rearing project which was always my wish. I had no source of income to start this project. I do casual jobs and these are not paying well. The small amount of money that I would get was only for the basic need of the family. I had no extra money to save so that I can start this goat's rearing project. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly OI felt so happy and we decided to invest in this project. Currently, we have Five goats and we hope this would multiply in the future, Goats reproduce twice per year and helps during any emergency since they can be sold. I will sell them when they would have reproduced to pay school fees for my children in school. My children would study well without being sent home. I will see them performing well and getting the best grades in school. I am so grateful for the support because were it not if GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite some time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on purchasing Five goats. I have always wished to start a goats rearing project. I am so happy because this dream has been fulfilled. I will sell them in the future to pay school fees for my children. I spend KES 8,500 on purchasing two mattresses. we now sleep comfortably unlike before. I paid KES 4,000 for school fees for my children in various primary schools. The rest of the money I spent on clothes, food, and other household items. We are grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am raising four children as a single mother and I provide for them through the making of charcoal. I aim to make sure all my children get to secondary school and smoothly complete their studies. Receiving this money means using 18,000 KES to buy six goats that will act as my education investment for my children. As we speak my firstborn is in class two and I know by the time he will be joining secondary I will have many goats which I will sell a few to pay for all his high school fees. I will do the same to all my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My second born who is in class one performed exemplary in his end of term examinations. This makes me see light at the end of the tunnel.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
All my children have two pairs of clothes. Three are schooling though only one has a pair of uniforms. They have always been requesting me to buy them school uniforms but the money I get through making charcoal is never enough. At times we sleep hungry or take only one meal for the whole day as I lack money to buy food. Currently, the prices of maize flour have been hiking making it more difficult to put food on the table.
