"My greatest desire has always been to build a more spacious house, since the hut we currently live in is tiny for a family of five and it is in a deplorable condition since it leaks in water whenever it rains. I will therefore build a two roomed iron roofed house that will ensure comfort for my children who are usually subjected to cold hence vulnerable to contacting diseases such as flu and pneumonia. Installing gutters around the house will also ensure i harvest enough clean water during rainy seasons which means i will spend the remaining part of my transfer to install two 300 litres water tanks to store enough water"

"I spent KES 14000 from my first transfer to purchase four goats. I aim to rear them as I had none at first. I am planning to sell them shortly after they reproduce and use the money to buy a dairy cow. I also purchased some building materials such as building poles and to renovate my house which was in a bad condition. I had not been able to renovate it for a long time due to financial constraints. Receiving the transfer enabled me to achieve this. I also bought some water storage equipment such as a water drum."

"I had longed to build a toilet for my household but due to insufficient resources, I could not manage. We were using the bushes for open defecation because I could not access the toilet. When I received the transfer, I purchased enough building materials to facilitate this. I also paid the full cost of the labour involved. Having the toilet is the biggest difference because previously I was using the bushes which were exposing us to the risk of waterborne diseases."

"I spent KES 10000 to clear my son's school fee arrear to avoid him being sent home. He is in high school and this will determine his fate in life that's why I want to ensure I don't fail him. With this payment, I am assured he will have ample time to comfortably continue with his studies. Apart from that I also built an extension of a single room for my children. My house was not spacious enough and they had to seek shelter from neighbours. Once this extension is complete, then they will no longer face the troubles of sheltering elsewhere at night. I also spent KES 7000 to buy a bicycle and a tank for water storage. This has greatly helped us in carrying and storing water, We are currently faced by serious water shortage in our area, thus having the bicycle to me is time-saving and more efficient compared to carrying water ourselves."

"My life is currently better as compared to four months ago because I can now afford to get clean water at a cheaper cost. Besides, the transfers have really assisted me in purchasing medicine whenever I fall sick without having to fully depend on my children"

"Happy is free. The happiest part of my day is in the evening when my children are home after school. After a tedious day of juggling between looking after livestock, tilling my beans farm to fetching water for household use, there's only a therapy from which the presence of my children accords. "

"Currently, we fetch water about 5km away from my home. Since I'm aged, it's normally challenging to walk for that long distance to get water and in most cases, I'm forced to purchase water hence additional budget. for the next four months, I have an additional goal of saving the coming transfers so that use them to purchase a water tank. This will help me save on both the cost of purchasing water and the struggles of walking for a long distance to fetch water because I'll be harvesting the rainwater."

"Having my own pit latrine has made my life to be totally different. This is because previously, my family and I used to relive ourselves in the bushes. This was totally unhygienic and most of the time we were always suffering from diseases such as typhoid and cholera. It was a really bad situation because every now and then we were always in the hospital. It was like a routine to my family that we were so desperate to put to an end. This was even affecting my children at school because it was difficult for them to concentrate on their studies because they were sick most of the time. But the coming of GiveDirectly has changed everything completely. We are no longer falling sick like before because we have our own pit latrine that has freshwater. I am so grateful to this organization because it has brought a major positive impact on my life."

"Casual work such as washing clothes or fetching water in people's homes is what sustains us. I make 2 dollars a day at most from this and it is not enough even just for buying food only. What strains me most is paying my son's school fees which is 18500 shillings in one term (3 months). Hence, financial instability is my constant worry in life. "

"Receiving this money will enable me renew the iron roofing of my house.Am a trained community health worker and most of the time we emphasize to members of our community on the importance of drinking clean water. The rain water I collect is no longer safe to drink because the iron roof has rusted.I need to lead by example so I will renew this as well as buy a water tank so I can store clean rain water to drink."
