Marceline
received a $518 second payment.
"Looking back at how our lives were and how it would have been now if we had not received the transfers, it is clear that we would still be undergoing great suffering. Our farming was getting worse every day since we never had enough finances to obtain the then needed types of equipment for facilitating the work. Currently, I am glad and proud of GiveDirectly since, through the transfers, I was able to purchase a water pump generator which is currently acting as a water pump meant for irrigation during the dry seasons."

Dama
received a $501 second payment.
"My life is currently different because I have acquired some livestock which are a source of wealth to me. I own two dairy cows and goats which I am expecting them to reproduce and have many of them. I can sell the offsprings to cater for my future financial needs. Furthermore, I will be getting milk from the cows for my family's consumption and I will sell the surplus to generate an income. This income will help me to pay for my household basic needs. I also managed to build a toilet through this transfer. I bought enough building materials to facilitate this. Before then we couldn't access a toilet. We were mainly depending on the nearby bushes which was exposing us to the risk of waterborne diseases. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because we are safe now since we are now using a toilet unlike defecating in bushes."

Irine
received a $519 initial payment.
"I spent the money I received on buying a heifer. The heifer is approaching calving stage and this makes me very happy. I know that in soon,I will be producing milk for my children and also for sale. I used part of the money on furniture for my home. I then bought a water tank to store rain water inside my house. With the remaining amount,I needed to pay school fees for my girl in a secondary school. Food for the household was the next thing I needed. I finally bought some clothes for my children and myself."

"I received the money while I was still asleep, early in the morning. It was the greatest day of my life and I thanked God for making this happen to me. I knew that my poor condition will change because I could end the water shortage issue."

Kangombe
received a $502 second payment.
"I received the transfer at a time when drought had struck us making some of the basic needs like water and food really expensive to acquire. I am grateful to GiveDirectcly because it's through their transfer that sustained us during that period. I was able to buy foodstuffs for my family and also to pay some household expenses. In addition to this, my life is also currently different in that I have now acquired a pair of oxen that is aiding me in my farming. I do not hire from anyone like I used to do in the previous planting seasons."

Gladys
received a $524 initial payment.
"The biggest diffefernce is the happiness when I got to build a iron roofed house. I use to fetch drinking water from my neighbours who were privileged to have built iron roofed houses before us. Sometimes I would feel embarrassed to turned away when I go to fetch water from their homestead. My life is different from how it would have been had I never received the transfer because I now have access to clean water. I use the money to construct a better house which also act as a water catchment for my family. The harvested rainwater we use it for domestic purposes and to drink. Due to this, I no longer go to the river to fetch water for use nor get ashamed being denied access to fetch water from my neighbours water tank."

Maureen
received a $526 initial payment.
"Upon receiving the transfer from Givedirectly I spent part of it on construction of a new house. We had to bring down the initial house were living in since we had been facing a lot of challenges over rainy seasons. We had to relocate and construct a new one on an a bit raised ground and currently everything is okay. With the remaining amount, we opted for a large water tank which we bought at a cost of 22000 KES. Over this season where there are a lot of rains, we had been collecting rain water and we are no longer frequenting the movements to and from the river. We are really thankful to GiveDirectly for making our long time dream come true."

Janet
received a $526 initial payment.
"Upon receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly, I spent part of it on buying a large water tank worth 14000 KES. This decision was due to the fact that fetching water fro the river had been so tedious since the water sources are so far fro our home. I also spent part of the remaining on paying school fees for my college son who had stayed home for quite a long time. With the remaining amount we decided to save in order to purchase a cow since that was part of our priorities."

Shida
received a $526 initial payment.
"I can remember very well I was heading to the dam to fetch water when my phone started ringing. But since I am illiterate I decide to ask my son who was also my helper to check the content of the message. After checking, he realized it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy and I decided to go back home and celebrated with my family."

Faida
received a $526 initial payment.
"Some times back we were hit by a drought that persisted for a long time and forced us to walk over long distances in search of water daily since I lacked a permanent water storage that would serve us for even a week. Through this transfer, I acquired a 4000-litre plastic water tank and gutters and installed it in my house. I am glad that this tank will not only harvest and store water for domestic purposes but also offers a long term solution in case of water shortage during the dry seasons, which makes it to be the biggest difference in my daily life."
