"The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time I take a rest after a tiring day walking longer distances to fetch water."

"I spend the morning hours in my farm before coming back home to do the house chores. I then go fetch firewood and water before evening sets in. Evening comes as a big relief to me because I take time to take a shower and relax after a busy day. This makes evening the happiest part of my day."

"I spent 50 dollars of my transfer on cementing my water tank because it was on top of timber but cement is durable. I spent 100 dollars on a three 3-seater sofasets because initially I had one 3-seater sofaset. This will help reduce chances of borrowing seats when there are many visitors in my house. I spent 60 dollars on two goats because they grow fast and in future will be sold in exchange for a dairy cow. 50 Dollar was spent on hiring a tractor to plough my farm and on maize and bean seeds. 100 dollars I spent on solar lighting system and a television."

Stephen
received a $499 initial payment.
"Having bought this cow, I will be able to get milk that my family can consume. I will no longer have to buy milk and hence we will be able to save money. The calves that the cow will reproduce, I will take care of them and when they mature, I will sell them in the future and use the money on other things such as starting a business or buying more land. This is the same as the goats, I will take care of them and when they will have multiplied, I will sell some of them and use the money on other important things. I have been living in a grass-thatched house for so long and so I decided that with this transfer, I will build a new house roofed with iron sheets. This way, we will be able to collect rainwater and my family will have water for their household use. With this new house too, my children will have enough space to study. May God bless GiveDirectly for what they have done to me and my family."

"We live in an area where clean water is not always available. As such, receiving this money means that we shall always have adequate amounts of freshwater for our livestock, farm, and household uses. I will buy a large water tank for storing the scarce resource, either by collecting rain or tap water. As a ripple effect, we shall lead a better lifestyle since we shall always observe cleanliness, have good harvests from the irrigated farms, and even ensure that our livestock are healthy."

"After I am done with the normal household chores, I milk my cattle and take the milk in cans to the road side for the dairy vehicle to transport to the nearest milk plant. I then head to my farm to do some farming activities like transplanting, planting, weeding etc of maize, vegetables and tomatoes. Later in the afternoon I bring the cattle to take water in the pans and chop some feeds for them to graze on until evening. The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when I mingle with my friends/villagers as we share advices and jokes while doing my chores."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I can now comfortably do farming due to lack of water. Before, I used to plant onions which used to take longer time to ripen than required due to lack of water because our place is a dry terrain. The chicken layers have acted as a quick of source of income as compared to before when I could hardly get."
