"I spent a larger portion of the transfer on buying two heifers and a bull which I am currently keeping them in my homestead. My expectation is that through these heifers, I will be able to raise school fees for my children who are still young. As they reproduce and increase in number, I can readily sell the offspring to help when in need. In addition to this, I also bought a bicycle to help in carrying water because currently we are faced with water shortage in our area. I have to travel over long distances in search for water. This bicycle is convenient for this purpose. Lastly, I purchased a new mattress and did some shopping on clothing for my family."

"The only source of water we have for our family dairy cows is from a village pond two Kilometres away from here. It is filthy, and on many occasions, my cows would refuse to drink it. As a result, they have not been giving us enough milk. I wish to dig a well to avail clean water for these cows and also for our family. The animals will produce enough milk for the family and surplus for sale and as such our household income will increase."

Halima
received a $494 initial payment.
"I spent my transfers to buy two cows, to purchase a mattress for my children and I, and to buy iron sheets for building a new house. I live with my five children in a one-roomed house, and at my parent's home, after separating with my husband 16 years ago. My husband remarried and moved on with his new wife. The house that we currently live in has a leaking roof that allows rain water in the house, whenever it rains. I sell coconut and charcoal for a living which is never sufficient for me and my children. I was happy when I received the transfers as I could never have imagined that I would ever build a house. I am also happy that I can rear and keep livestock that I bought, which can bring me some profit in future. My children and I used to sleep on the floor, but we now have a comfortable mattress that we can sleep on."

".This transfer from GiveDirectly has brought a very big difference in our lives. Having bought the water tank, we will be able to collect rainwater and hence we will not be making long trips to the river to draw water. We will be able to get water for household use. I will take care of the two goats that I bought and with time they will multiply in number. The offsprings will be of great help because I can sell some whenever I run out of money and use the money on other things such as payment of school fees. The few utensils that I bought will also help me whenever I have a ceremony at my house and there is a lot of guests visiting. My children too were happy because they got new clothes for themselves to wear. Thank you GiveDirectly for making our dreams come true. May God bless you abundantly."

Paul
received a $494 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is registration of clean piped water which wouldn't be possible before. Initially, we used to rely on river water which salty and when we used for bathing it causes skin whithening even after oiling jelly. In the next one month m, I am certain I will be drinking clean water and my skin will be smoother than before. There's a lot of happiness in my house because there's adequate food for my family and my kids have grown happy and healthier than before. My wife is also happier than before and has gained weight even from her cheeks."

received a $494 initial payment.
"I spent 150USD on a heifer because I have only one dairy cow and also in order to secure my future financial security. I also spent 100USD on a solar lighting system because there is no electricity in our place and we used to rely on kerosene lamp for lighting. I spent 40USD on a wheelbarrow for to ease transportation of farm produce, firewood and water because initially I used to carry everything on my back. I spent 100USD on three 3,-seater sofa set because I before I had locally made arm chairs which could easily break."

"I spent a larger part of my transfers on buying building materials improving the floor of my house from a muddy floor to a cemented floor. This is because I am old and my knees can't allow to bend therefore can't smear anymore. I also spent some on purchase of a wire mesh for my poultry house which is currently accommodating poultry and goats at the same time. This is mainly for their security and to keep them from straying to my crop farm. I aso a part on apart on purchase and farming of maize seeds. The remainder I have saved for clean piped water registration."

Lily
received a $494 initial payment.
"I used to spend a lot of time going to fetch water from a buying point where a 20 litre jerrican goes for ksh 5. After buying the water tank and harvesting rain water, I am able to spend time I used to go to feed my cattle and my chicken. As a result of this, milk production has gone up and egg production has also gone up. I am now waiting for electricity to light my house."
