"As a subsistence farmer, the biggest hardship I have faced in life is the recent Maize Lethal Necrosis disease that is destroying our crops. Although a certain NGO has provided us with water for irrigation, we are yet to get remedy for the disease. Of late, we are experiencing shortage of food items. Since farming is our main source of livelihood, the destruction of our crops by the disease has attracted adverse consequences."

"Receiving this money will enable me to purchase and connect piped water at $300 to my homestead which I will use to irrigate my farm. Cultivation of French beans is lucrative in this area due to the readily available market, yet the people who engage in it are the well-off who can afford to buy irrigation equipment due to prolonged droughts in this region. I also intend to buy two Friesian dairy cattle @$350 each which I will use to pay a dowry for my spouse whose parents took her back home three months ago after I failed to pay the bride price."

"My irrigation system is doing well where I have onions and tomatoes which I sell for income. This will ensure that even in the dry season, I will have enough supply of tomatoes and onions for my customers. I also have a cow which I milk unlike before when I used to buy milk and it was very expensive for me."

"I lost my job due to COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020. Since then I have been home trying farming as a business but I have
not been successful due to lack of capital. The dry season in this place is usually so prolonged so I would like to purchase irrigation equipment with these transfers because we have plenty of water around this farm which has not been put into use. This will enable me to be an all weather farmer and have an income throughout the year."

"Receiving this money mean a lot to me. Over the years I have been planning to start irrigation project but the money that I get from Boda Boda business is only for basic needs. This money will allow me to start my dream project. I will be able to grow crops even during dry season."

"I have been wishing to get money for installing an irrigation system on my farm for better productivity since I rely solely on crop farming and livestock keeping as a source of income. Unfortunately, we live in an area that usually experiences prolonged droughts. Hence, receiving this money means that my family shall enjoy a higher amount of income because our farm shall be more productive."

"Looking back at how our lives were and how it would have been now if we had not received the transfers, it is clear that we would still be undergoing great suffering. Our farming was getting worse every day since we never had enough finances to obtain the then needed types of equipment for facilitating the work. Currently, I am glad and proud of GiveDirectly since, through the transfers, I was able to purchase a water pump generator which is currently acting as a water pump meant for irrigation during the dry seasons."

"I was doing irrigation in our region and before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was only using buckets to water my plants. However, I acquired a water pumping generator, water tanks and pipes to help me do my irrigation with ease. I have been able to plant a variety of the vegetables, since it's now less costly as compared to before. I am expecting to sell more vegetables and earn increased income. I also bought a bicycle that has also been of great help in fetching water for my irrigation from far places when the water sources that I depend on have dried up."
