"Before receiving this transfer, my family and I were living in a small single house that be served as both kitchen and main house. When I received the second transfer, I used $300 to build a new house. I used another $100 to buy goats for rearing. I had for a long time had the desire of building a better house but the amount of money that I make from the butchery that I work in is just enough to buy food for my family. I make $5 per day and this money is hardly enough to meet the needs of my family especially now with the current high cost of living we are experiencing. The remaining amount was used to buy furniture for our new house. I am so delighted that we now have a new house to live in. GiveDirectly has made our home more comfortable to live in."

"I am a livestock farmer and have desired to boost my farming by purchasing more livestock. I spent $320 to purchase 3 local dairy cows, this is because they are more resistant to harsh weather conditions. Similarly, I bought 2 goats and one sheep for $105, at the moment, I am happy to fulfilling my dream of improving animal keeping. This is my future investment and a reliable source of income that will assist me whenever I faced any financial challenge. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family that we have been using till recently when it was over."

"I spent $200 of my second transfer on settling a debt to a friend and I now feel that I have peace of mind. He has always been requesting his cash for months now but I couldn't afford to refund him because of the financial hitches I was undergoing. Also, I used $50 of the cash for the burial preparations of my grandmother who has been battling stomach complications. Additionally, I bought two goats for $60 which will serve as living assets that I can rely on at any time. I am hopeful that through these goats, I will achieve a lot since they normally reproduce twice a year and their offspring mature very fast. Therefore I do believe that I will have many of them within a shorter period. With the amount of money that had remained, I bought decent clothes for my two children and sufficient food which took us almost a month. It is now a relief to us because we no longer borrow food from neighbours like we used to do."

"I am a mother of two children, and I only depend on casual jobs to support them since my husband is jobless. With the transfer, I spent $7 on paying school fees for my daughter, Zawadi who is enrolled in school. Currently, she has fee arrears of $3. To expand my poultry farm, I also spent $10 on two hens and at the moment I have four. I hope to raise a flock from the four domestic fowl that will help me to begin raising goats. Since I run a food kiosk business, I spent $10 on boosting my business which now performs better than before."

"Since I was enrolled in GiveDirectly's program, I have been able to focus on my original goal of raising livestock, particularly goats. The venture into livestock has been made possible because GiveDirectly focuses on giving unconditional cash transfers rather than conventional support. As a result, we, the program participants, are at liberty to prioritize how we spend our transfer. It comes with no strings attached. In my opinion, this is what GiveDirectly does well. In contrast, I have yet noticed what it does not do well."

"My area is not good for crop farming due to the prolonged drought. As a farmer I have shifted to livestock keeping. Animal rearing does well in our area. I plan to buy 20 goats as an investment. One goat goes at $30 so it will cost me $ 600. Goats are resistant to drought thus I will have a source of income through their milk and meat once I sell them. I will also use $ 300 to pay school fees for my grandson who is at secondary school. He has a fees balance of $ 300. I am happy than once he is done with his KCSE examination, he will get his certificates and proceed to college. I give thanks to Give directly for their program."

"Drought and hunger are problems we all dream of curbing through agriculture. Although I have a 1-acre piece of land that I often cultivate, I have always admired going large scale but financial constraints have been a breach. When I receive the transfers, I intend to purchase an additional 1acre piece of land at KES 80000. I will be glad to cultivate tomatoes and watermelons in a surplus. The profits from tomato farming are double the expenses, this attracted my attention to venture into this farming. I will use the profits to purchase an additional piece of land and engage in business (apiary, dairy and goat rearing ). I am a business-minded fellow and I wish my wife Precious, could also have a source of income hence assisting each other in raising the family."

"When we received the second transfer, we used $60 to buy goats for keeping. The goats investment was was a savings plan towards payment of school fees for our first born son who is joining form one next year. We also paid his initiation fee of $90 since he is undergoing this right of passage this coming December. We did not want a situation where we will not have money for this rite when that time comes. We used another $25 to buy furniture to be used in our house; we did not have a table and therefore we bought one. We then spent another $60 to buy food for the family. We received the money at a time we were facing a very serious drought and lack of food. Prices of essential food items had also skyrocketed and we thought it wise to buy maize in bulk which took us for a couple of months. There were some debts owed to us by the extended family. The debts accumulated to $70 and we used the second transfer to clear this too. We now have peace of mind having cleared the balances. We used the amount that remained to buy clothes for our six children, making all of them happy and feeling part of the program that GiveDirectly brought. The money brought smiles in everyone's face in our family and we are so happy and grateful about this."
