Agness
received a $495 initial payment.
"I had completed the construction of a more decent and spacious house for my family before receiving the transfer and had started living in it though I had not fully furnished it. It was very cold at night since the walls are made of timber and there were some tiny spaces at the joints. On receiving my transfer, I decided to spend KES 7500 to buy some plywood for the wall and I am happy that we now live in a very warm house. Also, I spent KES 5000 to clear fee arrears for my children, KES 12000 to buy a cupboard, and KES 15000 to buy new poles to use in fencing my farm since the existing fence had collapsed and my livestock had been destroying my crops. In addition to this, I used KES 2500 to construct a shade for the water tank that I had already bought, KES 9200 on clothes, a blanket, and a three-seater seat, KES 2000 to buy drugs that the doctor had prescribed them for me after my check-up and used the remaining KES 4300 on food."

"We are experiencing drought and famine in our area, as a parent, I am required to wake up early in their morning with other relatives to walk 3km to fetch water at the only water source. I was on my way back home with my relatives when I heard my phone ringing. My colleague verified their cell phones and truly it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. Upon reaching home, my helper verified the messages and informed me that I had received my transfer. I felt very happy about receiving my transfer since I had never imagined I would receive such a huge amount of money in my entire life."

"I spent my transfer to purchase building materials including 4 lorries of building stones and 4 lorries of sand which cost KES 46,700 in total. This was for the construction of a permanent house for my family. The one that I had earlier was about to collapse and leak a lot during the rainy season to the extent that it would be filled with water. I had to dry it by fetching the water out. In addition, I set aside the remaining amount for payment of labor charges"

received a $495 initial payment.
"Even though I have not started using the large water tank that I bought, this has been the greatest project so far as it will soon cushion us from the hard experience of fetching water from the river located kilometers away from home. It will be a solution to the scarcity of water not only for the livestock but also for our household use."

"At around 10am in one of the fine mornings when I was from fetching some water in the well is when I received the transfer message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and ululated inwardly since I did not want people to know that I have received the money. While thanking God for bringing GiveDirectly to me, I sat alone in my house and drew a plan on how I was going to spend the money on. Two days later is when I withdrew the money already having my expenditure plan."

received a $495 initial payment.
"For a while, I have been living in a small congested house. On receiving the money the first objective I thought of implementing was to increase the size of my house as well as placing an iron sheet roof. I bought 16 pieces of iron sheets for KES 14,080.00. Having been sleeping on a mat and a traditional bed which was very small for quite some time I saw it prudent for me to buy a standard bed and a mattress for KES 10,000.00. I also bought 2 goats for KES 8,000.00. My aim was to buy a cow but looking at how dry our area is, I offered to buy the goals because they can easily cope up with the climate compared to cows. As I stated earlier that our area is very dry I saved the rest of the money for food and water."

"It was at around 8 AM when I was fetching water from the dam when my elder son followed me looking all excited and I suspected that there was some good news he wanted to share with me. Before I could even ask him, he said that I had finally received my first transfer as promised earlier. I was so happy and I remember I went back home and started planning how I would use the money with my whole family. I will forever be thankful to GiveDirectly for the huge positive transformation it has brought into my life."

"I was from fetching water for domestic use at the river when I heard my phone ring. I decided to check and read the message before continuing with my chores and upon reading that I was KES 55000 richer, I became so happy and immediately knew that my son would finally join a college as we had planned. I am so grateful to have been among the lucky people to receive their transfer on time."

Mercy
enrolled.
"Our main house is very old and when there is rainfall, water seeps from the floor creating an unsafe living condition. There is a bad smell that is emitted from the wet surface which poses a health risk to all of us. Receiving this money means that I will be able to construct a house, cement it and pay for labor costs all amounting to KES 40000. By doing this my family and I will stay safe and live in peace. I also intend to use the remaining amount of the transfer to buy one dairy cattle and clear school fees arrears for my children."
