Peris
received a $510 second payment.
"We have never owned a cow ever since we got married. We made it our first priority when we received our first transfers from Give Directly. Our expenses have now reduced because we no longer buy milk. We instead sell the surplus which has enabled us to buy other livestock such as goats and also chicken. I thank Give Directly for supporting me and enabling me to acquire these assets"

Maina
received a $529 initial payment.
"Even though I am lucky to be employed, I always struggle to invest and bring more assets to my family to help me in future meet any financial needs arising. I used KES23000 of my first transfer to buy a cow to add to the one I had since this is an asset that with time I will be getting milk from both household consumption and sales. I had built a house but due to overwhelming financial needs in my family I have not been able to complete it hence, I took KES18000 of my fist transfer to complete and so happy I have a decent house that I could not have completed if it was for GiveDirectly. I have planned to save the remaining amount to help me in my daily household need and on buying chicken feeds."

Peter
received a $529 initial payment.
"I bought two cows using the transfers I got from Give Directly. I managed to buy one dairy cow and a heifer at KES 44000. I am already milking the dairy cow and I can't count the instances I was relieved financially from the sales of milk from this cow. It has financially supported me on many occasions and I attribute all these to Give Directly. Apart from that I also bought chicken. I am planning to open a big poultry farm in this village. I have always wanted to start one but lack of funds has always hindered me. I thank Give Directly for their support, I could not have achieved half of what I have done now without them."

I know that by this time, my potatoes will have fetched me good money and chicken eggs will be a constant in source of food and also money. In the end I will have the ability to cover all my family's needs."

Geofrey
received a $481 third payment.
"I spent part of my transfer on putting up a chicken coop. I had a poultry structure but it was not in good condition because the structure was small and congested which was not good for the birds' health and growth. I used the remaining amount to build an eskew back at home since I did not have one. I finally used the remaining amount of money to add more equipment and food for my poultry project. I am determined to make sure that my birds are ok because I have a ready market in December and I would not want to lose them before then."

"Our goal as a family is financial stability. This we plan to achieve through different strategies that my husband and I came up with. First, we will purchase fully grown dairy goats to supply milk within our community at an affordable price. Secondly, I will buy a sewing machine to put my tailoring skills into use and make extra income from it. Thirdly, my husband and I went for lessons in poultry farming specifically rearing chickens and we will spend part of the transfers to start this lucrative project. Since he works in one of the biggest markets in Mombasa, he already found ready market for the chickens. "

"Starting a motorbike spare parts business is what receiving this money means to me. As at today, I have a son who has done a mechanics course but he is yet to secure a job. With the help of GiveDirectly unconditional cash transfers, my plan was to offer a capital to him in order to start the business. This will benefit me directly since it will act as our main source of income. On the other hand, I will personally start a poultry farming, to supply chicken at the nearby market. This will change our livelihood, a transformation that I have longed for."

Jumwa
received a $527 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on purchasing two beds and two mattresses, previously we used to sleep on mats which were really uncomfortable. I went ahead and bought three goats at KES 9000 and chicken for KES 1500 as my well thoughtful assets. I also bought some building materials which included building poles to renovate my house which was in poor condition. I then bought a solar panel at KES 1900, previously I was using some candles or sometimes stay in darkness. With the remaining amount of money, I paid school fees for my child who is in secondary school."
