"Before the transfers, I did not have any business. I used to rely on income from casual work and jobs at construction sites to meet my daily needs. Since the jobs were very inconsistent, I would end up having a lot of debts just to keep my life going. Life was not very favourable for me. When I started receiving these transfers, I used part of it to buy chicken on a monthly basis to start a poultry project. Right now the project is doing well and as a result, I have been able to use the profits from the business to pay back all my debts. Through the little profits I get from the project, I have been able to buy myself new clothes and I no longer struggle to meet my needs as before."

"On receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I had a lot of plans in my mind. Together with my household members, we sat and came up with the list of goals we wanted to achieve before exhausting the total sum of money we had received. Having lived in a single house for the better part of our lives, we decided to construct a new one. We had to buy 16 iron sheets which cost us 30000 KES. We also considered fencing all around our piece of land a project which needed a barbed wire worth 3000 KES. We also picked on the construction of a chicken coop in preparation to start a poultry project and we needed a chain link. Foodstuff for the household was also on our list and we decided to buy two sacks of maize and farm inputs. The remaining amount went to savings which will be useful later in the management of the construction project and in purchasing the chickens."

"in the next four months, I have a new goal to expand the construction of the chicken coop to accommodate more chickens. The initial project was to start small but with time I have seen it grow and currently it needs expansion. I have been saving towards the same and starting the expansion process will be an easy task and will not take a long time."
