"My life has greatly improved as I have avoided conflicts with my neighbors emanating from my chicken destroying their crops. I had lost some crops too to these birds as they fed on my young maize crops, eating ll the leaves beyond recovery. I am so glad that I have managed to contain them in a closed compound using a wire mesh fence. The project gives me about KES 1200 per week. From this, I am able to feed them and also meet my daily needs and make savings in a merry go round group."

"Receiving this money means privacy for me and my husband. We plan to build a separate bedroom for ourselves and stop sharing the one we have with our children. This will cost about 20,000 shillings. I will also pay 33,000 shillings worth of college fees for my two children and invest 39,000 in a goat and chicken rearing project to earn income for the family. The rest will be spent on food and other daily needs of the family."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the security that I got for my poultry farm by fencing it all around. I bought some wire mesh and completely fenced my compound. My chickens are safe from thieves and predators. I am also able to contain them so that they don't become destructive to crops on neighboring farms. I get time to attend to my other issues during the day and only come back in the evening to collect eggs. The proceeds I get from this investment is used to meet my daily needs."

"There were a lot of fun activities that came with the December Holidays in my family last year, courtesy of the transfers that I received. We had never celebrated Christmas as a family in a big way before in our family due to low income, so what we would do on such a day was just to ensure that we got at least a decent meal, usually one that consists of meat/chicken and rice/chapati which are rare dishes in our family. Things were a bit different this past Christmas season where I organized a huge party with lots of food and drinks which were enjoyed by friends and relatives. For the occasion, I ensured that my family members were glammed up in new clothes and shoes, all which I purchased with part of the transfers. I also decided to pay the transport charges for my family members who travelled to our rural home during the Holidays which also took a good amount of the transfers. When all had completed, I used some of the transfer to boost by french fries business by adding more potatoes then saved the rest of the money I had left."

"A friend of mine and I came together and made a decision that we needed to have a business that would sustain us financially after the project is over. After long deliberations, we settled for a poultry project where we will be having layers and broiler chickens, so we will be selling both chicken and eggs. For this to be possible we agreed to be saving the whole amount that we receive each month from Give Directly until we have the amount required. I have been saving all my transfers in my M-pesa account each month as agreed including the amount I recently received."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that l started poultry keeping which is currently doing very well. I am able to sell them when I need to attend to any emergency or even support my parents in households expenditure, as compared to before when l did not have any source of income. I would depend on my parents for everything and yet they also have other responsibilities. The chicken are also a source of food to us especially when things are tough and our family have nothing to eat."

"I spent a large portion of the transfer received to build a house for my son. My son has been sleeping in a neighbors house and I thought that it was right to build him his own. I also bought some chicken for rearing using part of the transfers. These will come in handy in the near future to meet the daily needs from the sale of eggs. I used the rest of the transfers to pay my daughter's secondary fees."

"Onn receiving the first transfer, I decided to spend part of it on buying iron sheets which I used in the construction of a chicken coop and a dairy shed. These were towards the plan to start poultry farming and improved the dairy farming I was initially doing respectively. I also used the remaining iron sheets on the construction of the goats' house. The remaining amount went to the purchase of three rolls of barbed wire which I used in the partitioning of my fields, complete the payment of a chaff cutter which I had earlier on obtained on a loan an also bought cement in preparation to renovate my old house."
