"The biggest challenge I am currently facing is prolonged chest pains attributed by the energy draining charcoal burning occupation I engage in. Sometimes I manage to get two 90kgs bags of charcoal a month and sell at 800KES per bag. This earns me utmost 1,600/=. This is not worthy the energy drained during burning the charcoal. Sometimes I spend a big portion I the money to buy medicine to treat my chest pains."

"I have been suffering of chest pains for a sometime. After withdrawing the money before looking at my health, I decided to clear the fee balances for my 3 primary school children. I paid KES 10000.00 to the school so that my children could be retained in school for proper learning. Thereafter I went for an x-ray for my chest and spent KES 5950.00 for the x-ray and the medicines I was given. I also bought 4 goats for KES 10000.00. For the remaining amount, I decided to use it for food and also my monthly reviews in the hospital where I was told to go for check-ups once a month"

"When I received the first thing I considered was paying school fees for my grandchild since he had been home for three days now and he was also my responsibility ever since the mother who was my daughter died during childbirth, so I went ahead and paid KES 500 for tuition but although I was not done clearing it he would at least manage to attend classes once more. I also went ahead and bought for packets of maize flour each at KES 100 accumulating to KES 400 because we had no meal in the house and depending on the harvest was not an option due to the consistent drought. Lastly I bought medication since I suffered from high blood pressure and I had run out of my medicine where the dose cost me KES 100."

"I am a widow with 7 children who depends entirely on me for all their life needs. Food insecurity is the biggest challenge I am facing in my house. My children's education has been much affected and interrupted by being sent home for school fees now and then. My children have no good clothes nor good beddings and are all suffering from scabies and I do not have money to buy medicine for them. I have no drinking water in my house and we depend on salty water from the nearby borehole which are not treated and not safe for drinking. Sometimes my children suffer from diarrhoea which makes them having stomach ache now and then."

"I spent most of the money on paying school fees for my child. He was about to be sent home due to school fees arrears and I kept thinking about what I was going to do to get the money needed. I was not able to pay the school fee because the money that I had set aside for his fee, I used in buying some medicine for him. He is usually sickly and there are some drugs that he usually takes. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly because the transfer was timely, my child was hence not sent home."

"I spent all the money on medication. Weeks before receiving the money I started feeling ill. I visited the chemist took some over-the-counter medicine but it did not help me as such and everything became worse for me. I lost my hearing sense, I was no longer able to walk, became very weak, and even could not talk properly. So when I received the money I decided to use it for my medication. I visited the general hospital in Kilifi for medication and was even admitted. I am grateful that I am now getting better but still not out of danger."
