"The only thing that I can do now given that I am old and less energetic is to have a dairy cow that provides milk for use at home and sale. This is challenging given that getting pasture and water for the animals is tough and the amount of milk that I get fluctuates earning me less money."

"I am eternally grateful for my children. They are all so determined to study and make a difference in society. They have dreams of becoming doctors, nurses, engineers etcetera. Neither of them has ever given me trouble with disciplinary issues at school. Their grades are good and they work very hard at home to ensure that the house is in order, there is enough firewood and water for our use."

"I am satisfied with GiveDirectly because I did contracts on a charcoal burning site, on people farms and fetch water just to survive. I do those things no more because of the help I got from GiveDirectly. All I can say to GiveDirectly is thanks."

"When I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly, I was able to paid my children school fees, buy food stuffs for my family and some medicine for my farm. My new goal now is to buy a water pump machine that I can use for my farming process. Having a water pump machine will help me reduce the stress of watering the farm; by that, I will have more crops growing effectively which will yield a wonderful harvest this for year."

"My main focus after receiving the second transfer was to infest on a long-term project that will still work out and provide for my family of seven many years to come. Out of the total amount, I spent KES 44000 on the purchase of eight sheep that I am currently rearing. I chose this as the best since our environs receive less rainfall that is not sustainable in crop farming but works best with livestock farming since we have a permanent river a kilometer away from my household where the livestock can always get water. I also spend the remaining KES 10000 on buying extra iron sheets that I used in the extension of a room for my children on the initial house I had. I am glad that it is now complete and we are all accommodated within the same roof without anyone seeking a place to sleep in the neighborhood like my two sons used to do."

"Imagine walking for three hours to look for water with a kid at your back only to come back with a 20 litre jerican. That has been my struggle for the longest time and My wish has been to have a water tank so that I can harvest water during raining seasons. This dream has not been achievable because being a casual worker and earning averagely KES 500 weekly, I have not been able to save because I have to sort other family responsibilities. When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to save toward buying a water tank and pay school fees for my kid. I saved KES 1500 of the recent transfers and spend KES 600 to pay school fees and KES 900 to buy food for my kids. I'm so grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support."

"When I received my second transfer, I saw the need of investing it in things that can easily be converted to cash. Because of this, I spent KES 25000 to purchase five goats. I settled on this since they increase in number over a short time, their milk can be used to make tea and they rarely get sick like cows. In addition, I spent KES 17000 on farming by hiring a tractor for land preparation and planting purposes, buying hybrid seeds, and hiring people to help me weeding them. From the KES 12000 that remained, I bought a small water tank at KES 3000 so that I can be using it to store water for domestic use and used the remaining amount on food, a blanket, and clothes."

"From my recent transfer, I spent a total of KES 30,000 to buy three cows. I intentionally bought the cows as away of investing for my future. I look forward to raise a heard of cattle from the three cows. They will be beneficial to my household in future in terms of provision of milk. In addition, I spent KES 10,000 to buy a 10,000 liters water tank. The tank will greatly help me to harvest and reserve rainwater. This will be of great help since in our area, water scarcity is often a major problem. I am glad that I shall always be able to have additional source of water for my household."

"I needed a cool environment at my place and during the hot season I thought of planting some few seedlings and water them. After few months, it's a miracle to see them grown to good size and I hope they will bring a good shade some years to come."

"Life is really hard in this village. The only source of income that majority depend on is quarry jobs. At my age it's nearly impossible to perform such physical tasks. This has always made it difficult for me to get money for food and other basic needs everyday. I'm always forced to depend on my daughter who's living with me here to take up those jobs and get us supplies. I also have a water point that my sons built for me to run and make money, but the numerous water outages in this area interferes a lot with this business. If only I could acquire a tank I would be happy because I will be able to store water and sell during those outages."
