"My life has been totally different ever since I expanded my kiosk. The shop was our major source of income since my spouse is jobless. It is the only business we were depending on. It reached a time when we consumed the profits because our needs were more than our source of income. We could not restock the shop. We were forced to take a loan so that we can boost the business. Finally, we had to close down the kiosk because we could not pay the loan and still cater to our needs. I am so thankful to Give Directly for financial support. I believe they were God sent. We had reached a rock bottom and I never that the organization was sincere in the first place. There is now hope for the business being successful. It is now doing well since there is enough stock and money to support it until it becomes stable. I am glad because I am able to pay school fees for my child and comfortably cater for other basic needs." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Having being employed as a motorcycle rider, my spouse earns close to ksh 200 per day which is barely enough to adequately provide for our family. All this money ends up in buying our daily food and the little amount he saves goes to paying school fees for our four children in primary school. We have some goals in life such as building an iron roofed house, starting up a business among other which we got no hopes of ever achieving now that we lack finances to support us in doing so"

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying a second-hand motorcycle at KES 35000. I believe it will help me in fetching water from the dam which is very far from my home. Previously I used to carry heavy jerrycans which were very tiresome. I had even started having back pains as a result of this. I am happy I will not have to carry water anymore. Apart from that, I will also be earning income from this business. It will be used in transporting goods and a means of transport to people in our village. In addition to that, I also bought five goats at KES 12500. I am planning to sell the offsprings when they mature and buy a pair of oxen in the near future. I decided to expand my business of selling some vegetables with the remaining amount of money."

"In the next six months of my life, I hope I will have bought both oxen and cows for rearing. I'm hopeful with time I won't hire people to plough my farm because by then I'll be having oxen to plough my farm. This will save me the cost of hiring someone to plough the farm. In addition, I won't budget for milk anymore because after they will have given birth I'll have enough milk for the family." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I have lived the entire past of my life as a casual laborer and housewife thus raising an income to sustain my household daily basic needs had been so hard due to scarce resources. I had lived in a single grass-thatched hut and I had planned to build another one but overwhelming basic needs could not allow me to have one. My life is currently different from how it would have been if I had never received the transfer in that I was able to build a decent iron-roofed house that could not have happened without transfer. We majorly depended on casual jobs and it had been so hard for us raising our family basic needs since our income if not on a regular basis. Currently, We own a motorcycle that has greatly changed our lives in that my husband used it as a motorcycle taxi hence getting us daily income that can cater for our daily basic needs and save some for our future lives. I also bought a cow that I am so proud of, am engaged in my farm looking after it and am sure that soon I will have milk from my farm for both household consumption and sale. I see my cow as an asset that with time will reproduce hence will have more cows that will be my security for any financial needs arising in the future. With GD transfers, I have hopes of a better future for what I have started with."

"Since I have been dependant on a small income from the motorcycle business, I was not able to achieve most of my goals. The income was only handling most of our basic family needs. I could not improve my life as I would want to. When I started receiving these transfers, I used it to buy building materials such as cement, sand, and ballast which I used to plaster the floor of my house. I no longer have to treat the diseases my family used to suffer as a result of dust from the floor." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I am a motorcycle rider. Going out to the road every morning does not guarantee a successful day as there are some bad business days. Given that this is our only source of income, it makes me happy to come home in the evening with food for my family. " (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I'm planning to raise money so that I can purchase a dairy cow in the next four months so that I won't budget for milk in the future. After achieving the goal of purchasing the cow I'll later save the coming transfer and buy more goats so that after they have given birth I can sell them to raise money for purchasing more cows for rearing. With the dairy cows, I'll be assured of additional income from the sales of surplus milk. At the same time, my family will have enough milk for consumption." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Most people in my community depend on stagnant water pans for their domestic purposes like livestock and household chores. When they dry up during drought, we are forced to hire motorcycles to go for water in distant rivers. This is often costly when there is no alternative source of income. "
