How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I was operating a business but it was not doing well. Thus the transfer has enabled me to buy more stock and increased my earnings. I also paid for my motorcycle since I had acquired it on loan. I am getting an income through this motorcycle. I wouldn't have achieved this at my own cost.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done well in choosing and enrolling the needy households in order to uplift our living standards through the financial help. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my second transfer on paying for a motorbike that provides taxi services in our town. This is now a source of income to me since I am providing taxi services at a fee. I spent the remaining amount to buy daily foodstuffs and paying for other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My life has been totally different ever since I expanded my kiosk. The shop was our major source of income since my spouse is jobless. It is the only business we were depending on. It reached a time when we consumed the profits because our needs were more than our source of income. We could not restock the shop. We were forced to take a loan so that we can boost the business. Finally, we had to close down the kiosk because we could not pay the loan and still cater to our needs. I am so thankful to Give Directly for financial support. I believe they were God sent. We had reached a rock bottom and I never that the organization was sincere in the first place. There is now hope for the business being successful. It is now doing well since there is enough stock and money to support it until it becomes stable. I am glad because I am able to pay school fees for my child and comfortably cater for other basic needs.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 3 am when I heard a notification message on my mobile phone. I decided to wake up my spouse to check for me the phone because he is the one who kept it before slept. When he checked what it was all about he realized it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. My first transfer had been sent. I was very happy. I remember we talked about the money for a few minutes with my husband before we went to sleep again. They really made our night and I dearly thank them for choosing our household as one of the beneficiaries.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a large portion of my first transfer to expand my kiosk. I bought some items like flour, sugar, oils, vegetable, beans that were no longer in the stock. Previously I had closed the kiosks because I had squandered all the profits and had nothing to add new stock. I had thought of taking a loan from the financial institutions but I didn't have collateral for the bank loan. I thank Give Directly since the business is now doing good. They really saved me from taking the loan. Apart from that I also paid school fees for my child. Previously he used to be sent home to collect school fees and this was really affecting him since this could miss doing exams and he would end up repeating the same grade. I am now grateful because he is now studying well. I want to ensure he is not distracted in any way because I now have the means to facilitate his studies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I got married in a household whose economic activity is charcoal burning. My husband is daily involved in charcoal distribution business to Mombasa from the village using a motorbike. His earnings has enabled me to start a small shop within the village but its capital is still low. When I receive the cash transfer aid from Givedirectly, I plan to expand my shop business in order to have a reliable source of income. Part of the transfers will be spent on buying ten goats so that we start livestock raising. This will change our life for the better and this transformation is basically what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I always spend my day at home alone. This is because my husband leaves very early in the morning to his job while my children also go to school. This makes me feel lonely at home the whole day. It is only in the evening when my family members are back that I get their campany since we share meals together and chat more. This makes me feel that, evening is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My shop business has not stabilized yet, something that has forced me to depend on my husband whose main job is charcoal distribution to Mombasa. This job is very risky and tiresome since he is always on the road. His earnings has not been enough to sustain our needs in spite of his much efforts to job dedication. Therefore, I consider lack of reliable source of income as my biggest hardship.
