Beatrice
received a $471 initial payment.
"I used the transfers to buy a bed, mattress and to replace the beddings as the ones I had were torn.
I used Kshs 20,000. These days I sleep so comfortable.
I used Kshs 20,000 to buy two cows, I do subsistence farming for a living, before the transfers I used to do it manually as I never had enough money to hire casual labor. With the cows on board, farming is easier, as I can cultivate a larger piece of land within shortest time possible.
I used Kshs 15,000 to pay school fees and to clear the balance of the previous terms. Before the transfers, my son used to be out of the classroom mostly and this affected his performance. I am looking forward to better grades since I managed to clear this terms school fees."

"I am a widow, and for the longest time, I have been sleeping on the floor as my bed is broken. I had developed backache problem since sleeping on the floor was not comfortable. My beddings were also torn and old as I had been using them for so long. I used part of the transfers of Kshs 20,000 to buy a bed, mattress and beddings. Since then I have been having sound sleep like a little baby.
I also bought a cow, for remembrance ,and to sell in the future should any emergency arise.I bought two of them worth Kshs 20,000
I never had a separate kitchen, I used Kshs 15,000 to build a kitchen. The main house is now in order since I built a kitchen."

Mike
received a $455 second payment.
"In 2020, after I closed my second-hand clothes selling business, due to the losses I incurred, I started working as an accountant at a hotel. The money that was left in my business, I used to build myself a house which I never finished. So, when I got the funds from give directly, I opted to continue with the construction of my house, and whatever amount remained I utilized in buying a cow at KES 33,000 and a goat at KES 4500."

Ann
received a $471 initial payment.
"The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. This is because I finally managed to build another house, something I never thought I will be able to achieve soon due to lack of money. My children will thus have a conducive place to study from once the construction is done. I am also glad because I now have a cow that is going to provide us with milk for our consumption when it calves. I will hence no longer incur the cost of buying milk like before."

Joan
received a $471 initial payment.
"The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. This is because we managed to expand our house by building an extra room where our children and the guests can sleep. The children are getting older and it is wise for them to have their bedroom. The guests will also no longer lack somewhere to sleep whenever they come visiting. We are also glad because we managed to clear the debt that we had for the cow. We have thus saved the money that we could have spent paying off the debt for other important things."

Charles
received a $471 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is the fact that I am happier than I have ever been before. I feel so much empowered that I have living assets like cows and in the process of putting up a better structure. These are things I always yearned for but which I was always reminded that I could not accomplish them soon. The assets that I have shall definitely make my life much more easy and enjoyable. I have also been living in a small house that would not accord me the luxury of hosting visitors comfortably. I am so much happy that finally I am going to be able to realize this dream of building a better house."

Julianah
received a $471 initial payment.
"The biggest difference is the dairy cow that I bought. I had sold all my livestock to pay school fees and was looking forward to the day I will be able to accumulate enough money to buy one. I would rely on proceeds from dairy which would just be enough to feed my family. I am so grateful that finally my life and that of my family have been improved through this transfer and the one child that is under my care will finally have a better living standard too."

Dominic
received a $471 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life is the sufficient supply of milk from the dairy cow I bought a month ago. It is always a good feeling getting to the cowshed and coming back with a jug full of milk every morning and later in the evening. I am grateful that my child can now get a glass of milk every evening."

Carolyn
received a $455 second payment.
"I am a small scale farmer and that is what I have been doing for the longest time to provide for my family. Previously, I used man power on a fairly small piece of land because I couldn't afford to hire a tractor. When I was enrolled into the program, I saw this as a good opportunity to advance my farming business. I spend part of my first transfer to hire a tractor to dig a new piece of land where I planted some vegetables. Since I didn't manage to achieve the targeted area, I spend KES 12000 of the recent transfer to dig another piece of land where I planted onions and tomatoes. I am looking forward to earn an estimated profit of KES 90000 compered to the profit of KES 10000 that I earned previously. I also spend KES 28000 to buy a dairy cow which unfortunately died and the balance to paint my house."
