How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to work harder with the money I saved to expand my business in order to sustain it and bring in enough money to support my family.
I am eager for the day when I am free from concern for necessities like food and school expenses.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The one thing about Give Directly that I found admirable is how everyone, young and old, literate and illiterate, gets an equal opportunity to register for the program. This is a valuable lesson that all participants in the program can apply..
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my second transfer of Ksh 53,010, I was able to purchase great seats with Ksh 20,000 to outfit the fabricated house that I constructed using my first transfer from Give Directly.
I also got new good utensils with Ksh 3000 and I purchased food that will be enough for a family of six for something like one month using ksh 10000.
I saved ksh 20000 so I can help back my business that shut down because of an absence of funds, and I'm glad to be opening it back soon.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 9 am and I was already up at the farm weeding when suddenly my phone rang hence notifying me of a new SMS. I stopped for a while to check it and I could not believe my eyes when I read that I had received KES 55000 in my mobile money account. I was so happy on seeing this because the money was going to help me a lot in achieving the plans that I had already made. I thanked God for it and I continued with the farm work since I was feeling rejuvenated with the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. This is because I finally managed to build another house, something I never thought I will be able to achieve soon due to lack of money. My children will thus have a conducive place to study from once the construction is done. I am also glad because I now have a cow that is going to provide us with milk for our consumption when it calves. I will hence no longer incur the cost of buying milk like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 28000 of my recent transfer on building another house. I bought iron sheets at KES 18000 and trees for construction at KES 10000. I decided to build another house so that my children could have somewhere conducive for them to study. The house that I have been living in will be the kitchen and the new one will be the main house. It has always been my wish to build another house but I didn't have the money to do so since I do not have a stable source of income. I am a single mother and I usually grow vegetables and I sell them at the nearest shopping center to earn some income. The money that I get from the sales is not much, most of it usually goes to the purchase of food and a little to payment of school fees for my two children. Other than that, I also spent KES 20000 on buying a cow. I decided to buy the cow because we didn't have one that could provide us with milk for our consumption. We have thus been buying it where we usually buy a liter everyday at KES 50. With the remaining transfer amount, I spent it on buying two bags of maize for our consumption. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for the great help that you accorded us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I sell clothes in a rented shop at Chebunyo Town. I pay KES 3,000 as rent which is costly compared to KES 10,000 profit that I earn in a month. My target is to built a front shop for my business and three rental houses in my wholly owned plot in Chebunyo Town. This will face out the amount I pay for shop rent and also generate some income from the rental houses. I am happy for Give Directly and if all goes well, my plans will be executed.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There have been rains and even in the last one week I harvested some beans for domestic use. My mind is at peace because with the harvest I can settle petty bills and I cannot go a day without meals.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My firstborn daughter is in a boarding school and I spend roughly KES 15000 in a term inclusive of current curriculum needs. COVID-19 really affected my volume of clothes sells and I started finding it difficult to cater for this cost as well as providing food, clothing and ample shelter to my household. I am worried my business might not pick as usual.
