"My husband and I have been selling eggs to earn a living for the longest time now. Our biggest desire has been to increase our income by selling milk but we couldn't afford to buy a dairy cow from the small profit that we were getting from our business because we had other bills to pay. One of my major goal when I was enrolled in the program was to buy a mature dairy cow so that I could start selling milk in a year's time. I spend KES 40,000 of the recent transfer to buy dairy cow and the balance to buy mattress and other household necessities. I am happy that the cow is mature enough to give birth and I can't wait to start selling milk."

"Being a small-scale livestock farmer, I spent my transfer to purchase 2 indigenous dairy cows at KES 28000. This was to improve it because I had one cow as well as a future investment for the family. In addition, I bought a permanent door for KES 10,000 and fixed it at my small shop. Earlier, the one I had was not strong enough, and always worried that thieves might break into my shop. Similarly, I repaired it by putting up a floor. In addition, I used KES 5000 to boost my business by purchasing more stocks. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family ."

"My first transfer from GiveDirectly brought in a dairy cow that has consistently provided milk to my family of seven. The second transfer came as a boost of the same dream when we straightened our livestock farming by bringing in two other livestock - a heifer and a bullock at KES 30000. The two will not only be useful in milk production in the future, but we can also sell their offspring out to meet some obligations. I also bought clothing for my children, foodstuff, and other household goods at KES 18000. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on paying school fees for my five primary school kids. I am grateful for all the changes I made with the support and am hopeful that I will keep doing more from where I am at the moment."

"GiveDirectly has uplifted the living standards of our people in our society. People built houses, bought cows and educated their children. At the moment they were all empowered in so many ways. Thus we are forever grateful. In my interaction with the staff, I have witnessed anything that was not done well."

"Owning a cow has been among the goals that I had set initially that I would wish to achieve. This is because I have been buying milk daily for our daily usage. I am a Boda Boda taxi rider, married with two children. The cost of buying milk daily was very expensive yet I did not have any reliable source of income. Therefore I opted to buy a dairy cow with my second transfer where I used KES 35,000. I then used the remaining amount on buying foodstuffs and clothes. IT makes me happy, grateful and relieved that buying milk daily is now a story of the past."

"GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better house and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well."

"I am a housewife and my family has been relying on my husband who is a mason. We have been living in a very weak, muddy single room and my husband had started building a two bedroom house so that we could move out of this danger. Although he was able to build the structure towards completion, he did not have the financial capacity to put up a permanent roof. We had settled on coconut leaves for roofing which we had already started preparing by the time I was enrolled. When I was called and informed that I had qualified for the program and I was going to receive my first transfer in May, we changed our minds and now settled on putting up a permanent roof. I spend KES 23,000 to buy iron sheets, KES 17,000 to buy a cow and the balance on food and other household necessities. I'm planning to spend my second transfer to complete roofing and put up permanent windows."

"My new goal is to be able to build a better a house through proceeds that I will get from the dairy cows that I bought from the first and second transfers. I have had this vision of building a much more bigger and better house but with the little income that I receive from my small scale farming and casual work, I could only raise enough to feed my family. We live in a very small grass thatched house with my family and sometimes it gets a little bit of discomfort living in there. When I received money from GiveDirectly, I invested heavily on livestock and my intention is to use proceeds from dairy to be able to put up one. I am so much grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that they offered to us."

"Starting a dairy farming project has been the greatest desire of my heart. I knew that with it my children would have a surplus of milk daily. Additionally, we would sell some hence earning a livelihood. Therefore I used KES 50,000 in purchasing two healthy dairy cows. I am married and blessed with seven children. Thus, I used the remaining amount of the transfer in buying foodstuffs for my family. It feels good to have achieved my dream in a short period."
