How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My next goal is for me to add one more dairy cow. I plan on achieving this goal by selling my farm produce. I am so grateful for the timely transfer that impacted my life amazingly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave us unconditional transfer at the stipulated timelines. Our social economic status was lifted tremendously thus we are grateful. In my Interaction with the staff, I have not witnessed anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer and my husband is a shopkeeper in the village. Together we are blessed with two children. Buying milk daily for our consumption has been very expensive. This is because we buy one litre at KES 60 daily. Hence l opted to buy a dairy cow worth KES 45,000. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to buy foodstuffs. All this was not possible before due to financial constraints, but I am happy and grateful that I was able to accomplish all this with support from GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 4:49 pm and I was out in the field looking after my cows as they graze. I had left my phone in the house. Suddenly my sister-in-law called unto me asking if the message that she got saying that she had received money from Segovia Technology was real. She was in the company of my brother-in-law. I decided to go get my phone so that I could check if I had received such kind of an SMS. I checked it and indeed there was a message saying that I had received KES 55000 from the same. I could not believe that I had received such a huge sum of money. I had to check my mobile money balance thrice so that I could believe it. I was so happy and I came back to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law and I told them that the money was real. We celebrated together and we thanked God and GiveDirectly for blessing us. I then called my husband immediately and I informed him of the good news. He was so happy too on learning about it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer brought into our lives is that we managed to complete the construction of the house that we had left pending for a while due to a lack of money. We also managed to build another kitchen. We are hence relieved and happy because we now have new houses that are roofed with iron sheets. Our living standard has thus been uplifted and we are very thankful to GiveDirectly for that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the recent transfer money on completing the construction of a house that we had started building before. We also constructed another kitchen house. We bought 40 ceiling boards, some iron sheets, and timber. We decided to build other houses because the ones that we had, had grown old and were grass-thatched. We did not manage to continue with the construction of the house because we lacked money. I usually practice farming where I usually grow vegetables and potatoes and sell them to get money. My husband on the other end is casually employed as a shopkeeper. The money that we get from our income-earning activities is only enough to buy food and other household goods. We are hence glad that we managed to complete the construction of the main house and we built another kitchen too. With the remaining amount of money, we used it in buying 20 tins of maize for our consumption and barbed wire for fencing our compound. We decided to fence the compound so that we could prevent the cows from coming to the compound and destroying the flowers that we have planted. We are hence grateful to GiveDirectly for their great help.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a mother of two and I got married in 2016 where we lived in a rented house. After the delivery of my first born in 2018 we came home to our parents where we stayed in the family house. We have been struggling to build our own house for the past four years .The house we occupy now belonged to my late mother-in-law and this makes me sad because we are mocked by our relatives.Receiving this money will enable us complete the construction of our own and also furnish it.We shall be able to do this by use of KES 50000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The construction of my own house though incompleted has given me happiness in the past 6 months. This is because I foresee that in the next one year am going to occupy my own house and get rid of the mockery from the people.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food shortage is the biggest challenge we are facing. The lack of rains has resulted in low yields in the farms forcing us to depend on purchased foods. This usually costly especially at the moment when we purchase both milk and maize flour yet we have no stable source of incomes. We buy 2 litres of milk daily because of my young children and their elderly great grandmother who need to be nutritionally strong .This is a challenge to us because we need to sacrifice KES 2400 a month to buy milk for the household.
