"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I no longer waste a lot of time heading to the stream, this is because I can comfortably harvest rainwater for our consumption, we used to buy drinking water but with this, we will be able to save up money on the cost of buying water daily. I am grateful for the support that changed my life to a higher level in society."

"We spent KES 36000 of the recent transfer money on paying school fees for our three children who are in secondary school. We paid KES 12000 for each one of them and we managed to clear the arrears. They had stayed for a while at home due to the balances and we did not know where we were going to get the money to pay for them the school fees. We do not have stable sources of income since I usually practice small-scale subsistence farming while my husband depends on casual jobs such as repairing broken radios to get money. We are glad that the transfer from GiveDirectly came through and the children were able to go back to school. We also spent another KES 7640 on buying two chairs and their cushions. We bought the chairs because we did not have any. Other than this, we also bought 2 bags of maize at a total cost of KES 7200 for our consumption. We are a family of ten people and we usually incur a lot of costs buying maize since maize crops do not usually do well when planted due to some disease that usually affects it. We also bought a water container at KES 3000 and with the remaining amount of money, we used it in buying clothes for the children. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your big help."

"Long periods of droughts in this area expose us to a raft of challenges. One of these challenges is the shortage of water for household use. The nearest dam is 3-kilometers away from my home and I have to make 3-4 trips. This is tough because I have to carry it on my back using a 20-liter Jerrican leaving with a lot of pain"

".The new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer is purchasing a water tank. We used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water for drinking, When I received the transfer I decided to buy a tank. I am so happy because currently we no longer walk that long distance in search of clean water since we harvest the rainwater."

Paulina
received a $466 second payment.
"I spent KES 4,000 to pay school fees for my daughter who is in secondary school. I am so happy because she is now studying well without being sent home like before. I spent KES 10,000 on purchasing decent sofa set seats for my house, KES 20,000 on food and clothes for my family members, and the rest of the money I bought a sky blast for storing clean water for drinking and later purchased household items that we did not have. I am so grateful for the support."

"In my village, we only have one tap that supplies fresh water which is not continually flowing. I intend to start a water kiosk to sell water and buy water tanks of 10,000 liters for storage. This can at least give peace of mind to the women who suffer from water shortages. Our staple food is Ugali from (maize flour) which we have to grind to get the floor. I will buy a maize grinding machine so that I can attend to my village people who walk for 15 kilometers to acquire such services. I am optimistic of a better tomorrow from this aid."

"I have always desired to have a kitchen garden. A place I can plant vegetables for subsistence use. The plan is to buy a water tank and practice irrigation with it. I will tap the rainwater and use it for irrigation.
The other agenda is to refurbish my house and extend one of the sides to create more space for us."

"In almost two days a week, I miss food the whole day. Life is very expensive because the farming that we are depending to produce food for us is no more. The drought has been persistently observed and we can not produce anything. My health has deteriorated very badly to a point now I can not lift even a 10 liters of water."

"Casual jobs require a lot of energy and at our age, my husband and I are no longer productive. With the current drought, we need money to purchase everything including drinking water. Since finances are a great problem, it is quite a challenge to provide for our family."
