Karisa
received a $488 initial payment.
"I spent KES 14,000 of my transfer to purchase new beddings, this is because I was using the traditional beddings that includes sacks and treads bed which was not comfortable. I had wished to bought modern ones, however, I lack the finances to purchase the proper beddings. I also used KES 17,000 to purchase 5 goats and 8 chickens, this is to restart my livestock rearing a future investment for my family. Previously, I had some but I sold all of them to support the education of my children. Moreover, I used KES 12,000 to purchase new clothing for every member of my family. They had few pairs to change something that embarrassed me. The remaining amount assisted me to support my kid's education as well as buying enough food for the family."

Kadenge
received a $27 second payment.
"When I received the transfer I spent KSH 300 as tithe. I believe that once I give out the tithe I will receive more blessings. In addition to that, I spent KSH 1400 buying chicken. I have always wanted to start a chicken rearing project but finances have always been a challenge for me. Upon receiving the transfer this was my priority. Once this project becomes successful I will be earning some amount from it. I also spent the remaining KSH 1300 to buy some chicken feeds. I am hopeful that the project will be a success and it will help in sustaining my family's needs."

Shida
received a $27 second payment.
"I spent KSH 500 of the transfer in buying 5 one day old chicks. I plan to rear the chicken and once they are mature enough I will sell them and earn a living from that. I also saved the remaining amount of KSH 2500. I am planning on buying some goats with the cash. I decided to wait a little bit longer because of the drought. Once we have experienced much rain I will then go ahead and purchase the goats and start rearing them too."

received a $472 second payment.
"I have plans to buy more chickens to add to the ones that I have. I have been rearing a few chickens and they have been of great benefit to me. I have a chicken house that I had already constructed before. I hence do not have many expenses to incur. I will only have to look for money for buying the chickens. I am a farmer where I grow maize and keep livestock. I usually sell some of the maize when I harvest them and I also usually sell five litres of milk every day where I get paid at the end of the month. I plan to use the money that I get from these activities on buying more chickens. The chickens are going to help me because when I sell the eggs, I will be able to get money for buying the household necessities such as sugar, soap, etc."

"After working for over three decades as a mason in town, I still have nothing to show. I was unable to save anything and with the help from GiveDirectly, I am planning to start rearing chicken, goats and cows. I am planning to use 30,000KES to buy 10 goats, each goat valued at 3,000KES for domestic rearing and sale the goats after every two years. I will use a further 20,000KES to start a chicken rearing business in the village. I have a ready market for chicken in town so I will be ferrying my chicken for sale in town. I will use a further 45,000KES to buy three indigenous dairy cows each valued at 15,000KES for domestic rearing. The milk produced will be for domestic consumption and for sale within the village."

"I have new goals that I would wish to accomplish. I plan to build a store for storing maize, livestock feeds, and farm tools. I also plan to construct a chicken house. I do not have the money to do the above at the moment but I am going to find a way. I am in a self-help group where we each usually contribute KES 200 per month. I plan to use the money that I will receive when it is my turn to buy some materials such as iron sheets for constructing the chicken house. I am casually employed at a school as a librarian where I am paid KES 7000 per month. I plan to spare part of my salary for the developments. I also plan to sell some of the chickens to raise the money needed. I wish to have a store because my houses are small in size and hence the space is not usually enough to store things such as maize and the livestock feeds. I also wish to construct the chicken house because my chickens do not have a place to stay. They usually sleep in the kitchen. In the morning when we wake up, they are forced to go out and this is not safe for them since they are exposed to the risk of being eaten by stray dogs or the bird preys. So with the store and chicken house, I will have somewhere to keep some of my things and the chickens will have a nice place that is safe for them to stay."

Juma
received a $11 initial payment.
"With this first transfer, I decided to start investing in buying 3 chickens worth KES.800 which would be multiplied and can be sold to increase our monthly income. The chickens are also easier to feed, unlike livestock which many have died during this drought season. Once done I think in the future I would like to own a motorbike to transport clients. This would bring some steady income and give my family financial security. I was even able to set aside KES.400.This would not have been possible without the help from Give directly."

"I became independent 1 year ago when my father asked me to move out. I started doing construction work to make ends meet and built myself a house where I currently stay. Because I was in a hurry to put a roof over my head the construction of the house was not thoroughly done. The whole house is muddy and when it rains it pours inside because I did not have enough iron sheets for roofing. Whenever it rains the house is wet and cold and I often get a cold because of that. I wish to complete construction of the house with an estimate of KES 13,000 which will be for the materials since I have the skill already. My ambition is to be a poultry farmer of chicken and so I plan on using KES 35,000 of my first transfer in purchasing 35 chicken to start off my poultry farming business."
