Noah
received a $463 initial payment.
"I have a workshop where I had been doing repairs for cars and motorcycles. For the past two years, this had been the source of my daily income. I have been planning to equip it, but due to insufficient funding; I have had to use the little pieces of equipment as I borrow some from the neighboring carriage. The first transfer was a boost to me after spending KES 15000 on buying new equipment that enabled me to increase the services I am offering to my customers. In addition, I also spent KES 25000 on a bull that I am fattening with the intent of selling it out in the future to buy a dairy cow. Since I am living alone at the moment, buying a cup of milk daily for my breakfast has never been that hard. I spent the remaining amount on foodstuff, clothes, and other household goods that were missing."

Beatrice
received an initial payment.
"Two things have changed in my daily life when I received transfer from GiveDirectly. First, I no longer have stress on how to get money for school fees as our child had been sent home more often to collect school fees. Having paid fees for the next one year, we shall have enough time to look for money for paying school fees for next year. Secondly, we have a lactating dairy cow and now we no longer buy milk for use at home as it used to be before getting these transfer. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that the gave to us to improve our livelihoods."

Joseah
received a $464 initial payment.
"When I got enrolled to the program and promised that I would receive KES 110000, I saw that my time had come to change the face of my home and end the financial struggles that I was going through. I had sold all the cows which I had when my mother was hailing and that left me with the burden of buying milk every day. I would spent upto KES 120 in a day on buying milk and when I got the transfer and bought a lactating cow, I took a breath from daily cost of buying milk. Having a cow has brought a big difference in my daily life as I no longer buy milk."

Winny
received a $464 initial payment.
"My daily life is different because I was able to purchase a dairy cow with my initial transfer. This is a dream come true because I am hopeful that I would be able to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. Secondly, I managed to purchase enough foodstuffs, especially maize which was very expensive. I am so grateful for the support that boosted my living status to a higher level."

Alice
received an initial payment.
"A day before getting the money, I had borrowed KES 10000.00 to take my daughter who had taken poison (red cat) to the hospital for medication after quarreling with her husband. Based on that, I took KES 10000.00 from the transfer to pay the debt. Since I have four children, one is in college while the other three are in primary school. Therefore, I paid KES 20000.00 for school fees for the college child and KES 9000.00 for the primary school children. The aim of paying the fees was to ensure that the children are not sent out of school for school fees to have a good learning environment to do well in their exams. I also used KES 12000.00 to buy a cow. This cow is a begging of investment because once it procreates I will not only get milk for family use but also for sale hence serving as an income for the family. For the remaining amount, I opted to use it for the family's upkeep."

Morris
received a $464 initial payment.
"I spent KES 20000 my first cash transfer on boosting my business ( selling bread) in the nearby town centres. Being my only source of income, I was so worried that it might end up collapsing because of the insufficient capital. I am now a happy and hopeful entrepreneur because the moment I revived it, it has been perfectly doing well with good returns. I later bought a goat at KES 4000 and a dairy cow at KES 22000. These have been the well thoughtful assets that I have been longing to own and I am glad I finally achieved my dream. I settled for them because they can survive so well in my region. Additionally, I paid school fees of KES 6000 for my two children who are both in primary schools. With the remaining cash, I had to buy foodstuffs and other household items."

Vivian
received a $464 initial payment.
"From my transfer, I spent KES 22,000 on buying a lactating cow. My goal for this priority was to help in obtaining free milk. As a result, whatever I would have used to buy milk, I will be spending on acquiring food for the family. In addition, because I have begun purchasing a parcel of land, I had a balance of KES 7,000. I spent another KES 7,000 to clear the payment and at the moment, I am glad I have settled the debt. Prior, the owner of the parcel of the land was contemplating reselling the parcel to refund me what I had paid. I am glad that the deal is sealed and I am currently owning 0.1 acres of land which I shall use for farming. The rest of the transfer helped me to acquire some clothes for my children who are currently looking smart and presentable."

Mercy
received a $464 initial payment.
"Before the transfer, I had little purchasing power and relied heavily on casual jobs to supplement my family's food budget. The fact that food prices had risen with little cash flow in our economy made life nearly unbearable. However, thanks to the transfer, I was able to not only purchase two lactating cows but also buy food in bilk. As a result, life has become more bearable because we are no longer in need. Furthermore, by selling three liters of milk, we were able to earn an extra KES 120 per day, which we could not previously."

Kazungu
received an initial payment.
"The biggest difference I have seen in my life since I started receiving the transfer was saving KES 21,000 from my first transfer to achieve my goal of starting a business. I am a father of one child and the entire family depends on me for the financial support. Due to lack of a sustainable source of income, supporting my family has remained a challenge. Therefore, I saw to it to be good to start saving so that I can venture into the business of riding a motorcycle. Furthermore, I bought two more cows worth KES 26,000, which I consider as a great achievement since they serve as a future security and investment. I am grateful for the support provide by GiveDirectly since the transfer brought a smile, happiness and peace into the family since we no longer lack food as family unlike before."

"I was in the field working on my farm when I got a notification on my phone. I reached out to it where I had placed it and to my surprise I had received KES 55000 which was my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was filled with joy and happiness as I have never received such an amount before. I felt relived about the stresses which I had on paying school fees for my child and acquiring a cow."
