How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main concern is for my children's education because it is the best investment. In order to help them secure a successful life in the future, I want to make sure they receive a quality education. I shall be guaranteed to be taken care of in my old age if they are successful. They must be independent for this to be feasible, and education is the route to independence.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
By providing us with support in the form of cash and allowing us the flexibility to spend the money anyway we saw fit, GiveDirectly did a fantastic job, in my opinion. We were able to decide how the money would assist us as a result, and we are quite proud of what we were able to do with it. Everyone approved of the selection criteria because they were reasonable, in contrast to other groups that frequently target a particular demographic. I was pleased that no one was treated differently because they didn't charge us anything to enroll.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first thing I did after getting the second transfer was pay off my son's college debt so that he could take his exam. I therefore thought it wise to give the college the necessary $100. My son is delighted right now because he completed his exam without any interruptions, and this has relieved my stress because I enjoy seeing him happy. Additionally, I spent $50 on my three primary school-aged children's tuition. In addition, I spent $30 on school uniforms for them because the ones they had heard about were torn. Due to the protracted drought that prevented us from harvesting anything for the previous three years, I therefore decided to spend the remaining funds for the family's maintenance.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While preparing an evening meal at around 6 pm at my home, I heard my phone vibrate twice. I had a question why twice? I left the seat I sat on to where I had placed my phone to check what kind of a message it was. Seeing the huge figure of KES 55000.00 that I had received, I did not trust my eyes. I called my daughter to clarify the message. She confirmed that I had received the stated amount from GiveDirectly as the first transfer. After the clarification, I found myself laughing out of happiness for receiving the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can testify of GiveDirectly is paying school fees for my children. It had been like a culture for my children to be sent out of school for fees thus missing exams as well as not performing well. When I received the transfer, I opted to change the culture thus making a difference in their educational progress. Seeing them missing examinations did not give me peace of mind. Our financial position as a family could not educate them because my husband is a mere shepherd and I relied on making and selling charcoal and thus could not cater to our children education. I am very grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly since it enabled my children to stay in school undisturbed till did their exams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A day before getting the money, I had borrowed KES 10000.00 to take my daughter who had taken poison (red cat) to the hospital for medication after quarreling with her husband. Based on that, I took KES 10000.00 from the transfer to pay the debt. Since I have four children, one is in college while the other three are in primary school. Therefore, I paid KES 20000.00 for school fees for the college child and KES 9000.00 for the primary school children. The aim of paying the fees was to ensure that the children are not sent out of school for school fees to have a good learning environment to do well in their exams. I also used KES 12000.00 to buy a cow. This cow is a begging of investment because once it procreates I will not only get milk for family use but also for sale hence serving as an income for the family. For the remaining amount, I opted to use it for the family's upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a business woman having a retail shop at my compound. Our town center is a beat far from many compounds circumferential to my house hold and therefore they entirely depend on my shop. I am running the shop with a capital of KES 10,000. The shop is overwhelmed by customers and there is a need to expand it but I have two sons, one in university and the second in secondary school making it hard for me to expand the shop. Receiving this transfers will make my shop grow very faster because I will have a full stock which will meet the needs of my customers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband was retrenched from work because of the covid pandemic five months ago. He was a watch man to our nearby Ganze secondary school. His age is also growing old. He was paid his pension and bought 4 indegenous cattle. One of it gave birth and we are getting milk for my children. My family used to take tea without milk and now my children are healthy because they are drinking milk everyday hence this is the source of joy and happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am struggling with diabetes, have children pursuing their education, one in university and the other in secondary school. The family depends entirely on my business. My husband is growing old and cannot do any job except looking for his few livestock. Struggling to meet the daily meals and balancing the shop revenues to meet all the family's needs with the little capital is the greatest challenge I have in my house.
