Sidi
received a $465 second payment.
"I spent KES 3500 to purchase a water barrel, I will use it to store enough clean water for the family. Previously, I had small buckets which could not store enough drinking water. In addition, I use KES 3000 to support my 2 kids' educational needs by clearing their fee arrears. Currently, they are still in lower primary. Furthermore, I use KES 10,000 to seek proper medical care for myself. I had been diagnosed with a chronic skin illness that is characterized by itching skin all over my body. Currently, I am feeling better after undergoing the treatment. Lastly, I used KES 20,000 to boost my goat keeping, by purchasing 4 more goats. This is my long-term investment and I intend to sell them when they multiply to cater for any needs that might arise in the future."

Jackson
received a $482 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that the financial support empowered me to accomplish my long-time dream( the availability of fresh water in my compound ). This is for sure the best achievement and a relief for my family and I. The water will be for domestic usage, commercial purposes, and use for irrigation since I live in a semi-arid region. Initially, we used to walk for like 10KM to fetch water which was tiring. Also, my wife is old and has issues with her backbone so there is a huge relief for her. Also, I am happy that soon I will start practicing drip irrigation. I am positive that in a few months to come, I will even scale up to the large scale farming with the help of the availability of the water which has been my prayer."

Kadzo
received a $482 initial payment.
"I spent KES 10000 on my first transfer to start a business( selling water directly from the tap). This has been my dream to operate it but I did not have the required resources to fund the project. Also, I cleared school fees of KES 8000 for my grandchildren who are in primary schools. They have always been on and off because of the accumulated fees. I later bought some building materials such as iron sheets, cement, and sand. This was for the construction of a pit latrine. Previously, I used to go to the bush to relieve myself since I had no good latrine. This later resulted in an outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my nine family members which took us a couple of weeks."

Wilson
received a $482 initial payment.
"Before I had cows but unfortunately, they all died due to a disease outbreak. This was the most trying moment in my life because I was left with nothing. At the same time, I had to start buying milk for our daily use. When I received my transfer, I prioritised purchasing a daily cow to reduce the cost of buying milk daily, thus I used KES 38,000. Lastly, I saved the remaining amount of money so that I would be able to purchase a water tank once I receive my second transfer. I am so grateful for the transfer that uplifted my living standards."

Edinah
received a $482 initial payment.
"My daily life is different because we were given the opportunity for us to clear the fee balances that were still pending. Therefore my children can comfortably study without any glitches. Secondly, we no longer worry anytime it is about to rain, but rather grateful because we would harvest the rainwater. This was a worry before because our roof was leaking, but now it's a story of the past. I am so grateful for the support that changed our living standards amazingly."

Beatrice
received a $465 second payment.
"I bought a water tank with a capacity of 3000 liters at KES 23000 and used the remaining amount on some furniture that I did not have, clothes, and food for the family upon receiving my transfer. I will be using the water tank to harvest rainwater for domestic use, especially during the dry season. This is the time that I usually spend more hours going to fetch water from the river since one trip takes at least an hour and I have to make several trips per day."

Jeneth
received a $465 second payment.
"After a huge investment in all the projects that my household had enlisted in the first and the second transfer, I am happy and equally grateful to monitor their progress. The dairy cow I purchased is doing so well especially now that I have a large water tank that collects enough water from the roof both for household and livestock use. I also managed to clear the current tuition fees and looking forward to raising more money to cover the following terms for my two children."

Dzendere
received a $27 fifth payment.
"A couple of days before receiving the money I had fell quite and had a terrible cold. I was feeling extremely ill especially considering my age, then even a terrible cold can put me down. Soon after I received the funds from GiveDirectly and I immediately went ahead to appeal for medical attention. After visiting the hospital I spent KES 1,000 for the consultation and medication. Some years back I was a very serious subsistence farmer but then drought has taken quite a toll on us and I have been depending mostly on my kids to bail me out in some situation especially nutrition. So after receiving medical attention I remained with KES 2,000 where I used KES 750 to buy six packets of maize flour, then used KES 580 to purchase sardines, kales, cabbage, sugar and cooing oil. As what i was left with I took KES 400 to purchase drinking water since is was also a hustle getting water unless we got it from the next village and lastly I use KES 270 to get laundry detergent."

Johana
received a $27 fifth payment.
"After I fourth transfer I decided to buy a motorcycle that I planned to use mostly for domestic purposes. Since I do not have all the money required to pay for the ride at once, the owner and I came to an agreement that I would have to pay for it bit by bit. Therefore I used KES 2,000 to pay for a part of the debt to the owner. Then took the remaining KES 1,000 and bought drinking water since it was quite scarce back here, also bought petrol for the motorcycle and used the KES 300 that remained after this to buy three packets of maize flour since food was also another problem for us."

Daka
received a $27 fifth payment.
"The prolonged drought has increased food insecurity and caused water scarcity, which prompts us to walk for miles to find a water pan. Therefore, when I obtain money, my priority is to procure food and water. I spent 4,400 KES from the three recent transfers to buy maize flour, sugar and pay a motorcyclist to deliver water for household consumption. Additionally, I used 2,000 KES to start a small relish business, intending to maintain a flow of cash for daily expenditures. Finally, I deducted 2,600 KES from the transfers to secure a goat, which I believe will reproduce, increase the herd and improve my means of livelihood."
