What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A couple of days before receiving the money I had fell quite and had a terrible cold. I was feeling extremely ill especially considering my age, then even a terrible cold can put me down. Soon after I received the funds from GiveDirectly and I immediately went ahead to appeal for medical attention. After visiting the hospital I spent KES 1,000 for the consultation and medication. Some years back I was a very serious subsistence farmer but then drought has taken quite a toll on us and I have been depending mostly on my kids to bail me out in some situation especially nutrition. So after receiving medical attention I remained with KES 2,000 where I used KES 750 to buy six packets of maize flour, then used KES 580 to purchase sardines, kales, cabbage, sugar and cooing oil. As what i was left with I took KES 400 to purchase drinking water since is was also a hustle getting water unless we got it from the next village and lastly I use KES 270 to get laundry detergent.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My grandchild who is currently in primary school owed the school fee arrears, and he could not be allowed to in school before clearing the fee. His parents do not have a reliable source of income besides they have other children whom they are taking care of. I, therefore, paid for his fee with part of the recent transfer. A portion of the money I spent on foodstuffs for my family.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does well in that it helps the needy in society. They have officers who come and access the situation by themselves and determine if you are eligible to get the transfers. This is good because genuine needy people can acquire the help and not imposters.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am growing old and not getting any younger. I no longer have the strength to go job hunting anymore. I mostly depend on my children for everything I need. The situation we are currently in with the drought and poor state of the economy has affected everybody. My children are too facing difficult times. Due to this, I cannot depend on them any longer and I have to find other means of attending to my needs. When I received the transfer, my priority was buying food for myself. I spent the whole transfer on food and I am now glad that I have some stock of food to last me for several weeks ahead.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy when I was told about the funds. My grandson told me about it because I am of age I cannot operate the phone by myself. When my grandson told me about it I was happy because knew that the amount was going to be of great help to me in terms of buying food and also other needs.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am grateful for giving me the funds. I can remember very well before receiving this cash I used to struggle a lot in terms of finding food. For now, I can clearly see a big difference I can eat well unlike before where I could go a whole day without eating anything. I am now happy that the situation is getting better and better each day since the day received funds from you thank you.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the cash on buying food. I am growing older and older each day. My biggest need as of now is food due to the living conditions we are in as at now. We are facing the worst famine in several years. Finding food has not been that easy for me and my family. I also saved the rest of KSH 2000. Due to the unforeseen circumstances, I decided to save the rest of the amount just in case I have an emergency I can be able to attend to it immediately.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security for my family. I often skip lunch since am left alone at home without food. Receiving this money will mean three getting three meals a day. I also wish to invest some of the money (approximately 2000KES)in selling dagaa.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest time is in the evening, this is when I normally have food for my stomach.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
At my age, 78 years of old, going without food forms part of my hardship .This has been largely contributed by prolonged drought. Previously with good weather conditions, we could harvest up to 10 sacks of maize which was able to take us up to the next rain season.I rely on my son, who works as a shopkeeper making 200KES profit in a day.
