"It was around 5 pm I had left my phone charging at home. I was in the neighborhood, then within that time, my neighbor said that she has received a message from GiveDirectly, Since I had left my phone I rushed back and check it out. I could not believe my eyes there was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. My family members were so happy too, it was the happiest evening we have ever had. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. We aligned well and went to withdraw the money the following day."

"I had a lot of plans right after enrollment and hoped to accomplish them after receiving both the first and the second transfer. I am a journalist by profession and have been working hard to grow in my career even though the demands have been high. On receiving the first transfer, I bought a lactating cow at KES 38000 that has consistently provided my family with enough milk both for household use and also a surplus for sale. Since I have been doing my content creation, I am looking forward to buying a digital camera that will help in shooting both during events and also when recording the content to air on my channels. I saved the remaining amount to combine with the second transfer and other savings that I am currently making to buy a new camera. This will be an opportunity for me to create a self-employment and even employ other people in the future. I am also planning to venture into poultry farming since this is another project that can run parallel with my projects. I am grateful for the support from GiveDirectly that has to fasten my plans and hopefully, all my wishes will come true."

"It is barely a year after I got married and since then we had been living with my wife in a single house that I previously had. It was our plan to put up another new house, but after great deliberation; we decided to spend the full amount added to the savings we had and bought a motorcycle worth KES 65000. we had been spending a lot while commuting to and from our workplaces that are a distant way from home. With the motorcycle, we have had a simple time since we are currently spending on fuel, which is much cheaper compared to the previous months. We are planning to construct a new house with the second transfer and in case of extra cash, we also have a plan to buy a cow."

Christine
received a $460 initial payment.
"My husband is still a student at the university in his final year. We have been struggling as a family to pay his school fees to the extent of selling the animals we had so that he be retained in school for a good concentration in his learning process. When I received the transfer, he had a fee balance of KES 32000.00 after selling a cow for the same. Therefore, I paid the KES 32000.00 fee balance so that he could have a conducive environment to prepare for his final examinations. I also bought a mattress for KES 6500.00 because the one I had was worn-out. I took KES 4000.00 and bought a goat so that I could again start the journey of keeping livestock after selling them for my husband's school fees. Thereafter, I bought some food and some clothes for my family."

"Purchasing a dairy cow within a short period is a dream come true and it is the biggest difference in my daily life. This has been my dream for a long time but I was unable to achieve it due to financial constraints. But today I am happy and grateful that I was able to realise this dream with my initial transfer. Additionally, I was able to buy enough foodstuffs and clothes for my family. I luck words to express how grateful I am to the organization for the immense support that lifted our living standards."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the investment that I made. Right now I have one dairy cow and I feel so much happy to have one already. This is one of the main economic activity that we engage in here and I am sure that this is going to help me a great deal in the near future."

received a $461 initial payment.
"I now have livestock that I never had before GiveDirectly came into my life. I got a mature cow and two sheep as of now and that has brought a big difference in my life. I never imagined that I will acquire some anytime soon but through financial aid, I was able to buy some. Soon I will stop buying milk for use at home and in case of an emergency, I would sell the sheep to save the situation."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I have always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money. I depend on small-scale farming, I plant Sweet potatoes and maize. This is mainly for consumption. I did not have the extra produce to sell so that I can earn an income. I used to spend KES 50 daily on milk. This is so costly because I do not have a continuous source of income. My children would miss getting milk and this was so demoralizing. Currently, I have enough milk for the family and I no longer stress about where to get the money to purchase the milk. This has been my dream and I'm so excited because GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill it. I am in a position to save the money that I would have used to buy milk for other household items. GiveDirectly had improved our living standards."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been in a position to invest in livestock. This had always been my dream it I did not have the money to invest. Majorly we plant maize and vegetables in our area. The produce that we get is for consumption. We rarely get the surplus to sell so that we can earn some income. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and grateful because I was in a position to fulfilled my dream. I have an ox. I plan to sell after a period of one year at a higher price. I will use the proceed to purchase a dairy cow. My family will get enough milk unlike now. The goats rearing project is also one of the best investments since goats reproduce twice per year and have a higher rate of return. I am so grateful because I have invested the transfer on this project. I will sell them when they reproduce in the future and used the money on purchasing dairy cows. I intend to majorly invest in the dairy keeping project. This is mainly to be my source of income apart from other casual jobs that I usually do. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite some time to happen."

received an initial payment.
"The income from the sale of farm produce couldn't be enough to cater to my family's needs and to buy a cow. It would have taken me longer to save enough money for buying a dairy cow. Having acquired a dairy cow at the moment I see that as the greatest difference in my daily life. Whenever I go out to look after the cow, I always feel grateful for the support which enabled me to acquire the cow."
