"I invested KES 14,000 on livestock rearing by purchasing 3 goats. This is an activity that I had desired to start many years ago but I lack the finances to actualize it. Goat rearing is highly profitable and easy to run compared to cows which requires a constant water supply. I intended to keep them as an investment for my two kid's educational needs. I also used a larger part of the transfer to repair my house by constructing an additional room, it was very small to fully accommodate both of my family members and our households items. In addition, I used KES 14,000 to lay my mother to rest she died a week after receiving my transfer."

"Initially, my goal was to construct a concrete water tank at my rental premise. This would help me to have a water reservoir thus I shall have adequate water for domestic use. Upon completing this goal, my additional plan is to fix connection of county water supply to my rental premise. As a result of this, I shall be able to have steady water supply for sale in order to raise an additional money for my family. The whole process requires upto KES 60,000. However, at the moment I have raised KES 20,000."

"Receiving this money means a lot to use in terms of reducing daily expenses, therefore, improving our livelihood. We depend on subsistence farming as the main source of income. We mostly farm maize, beans, and sweet potatoes. Our area is relatively dry, so sometimes we do not harvest any crops. At the moment, we also purchase milk from the market at KES 2,000 a month, which is very expensive. With this money, we, therefore, plan to use KES 40,000. It will mainly help us by producing milk to feed my family, therefore, reducing our daily expenditure. For the rest of the amount, we plan to purchase a water tank to help us collect rainwater."

"I am a widow and the only breed winner in my family. Since my husband passed away 15 years ago, I bore all the responsibility of taking care of the children. I earn a living by selling charcoal. I have struggled to pay school fees for my two children because of the low income I get from my charcoal selling business. After completing his secondary education, my son has been working on manual jobs (building houses, fetching water) for saving and clearing the school debt. Upon receiving the transfer, I spent KES 20000 to clear the school fee debt so that by son could get his final exam results and join college where he is going to pursue his dream career of becoming a doctor. Besides clearing the school debt, I also spent much of the transfer in building a house for my son. With him being of age (20 years), it is against our culture to sleep together as his parent under the same roof. For this reason, I built him a new house where he is going to live together with his younger brother."

"I am a mother of five. I cannot get to harvest rainwater since I do not have a tank. We depend heavily on small-scale farming, crops like maize, beans, and sweet potatoes. water is scarce in our area, with the only water point being approximately kilometers away. I'm old now, I am no longer able to go to the river as many times as I used to do before. This is hard for me hence I have been planning to buy a water tank. With this money, I plan to use KES 40,000 to get a 5,000-liter tank. For the rest of the amount, I will use it to pay school fees for my children."

"I spent part of my first transfer on clearing a hospital bill of KES 23000. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and anemia a while ago but u did not have the required cash for the proper medication. I am happy that for now, I am doing quite well and I can do all the house chores unlike before. I later paid school fees of KES 10000 for my son who is in his second year in secondary school. He was always at home because of the issue of the huge arrears which has been a major challenge. Additionally, I bought building poles which I am intending to building a new house because the previous one was not in a good state at all. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying foodstuffs like maize flour, vegetables, fruits, milk, and when water."

"From the this first transfer, I bought one bundle of zinc and a bag of rice. Getting food has been a challenge for me as my age can no longer permit me to do any hard work again. Moreover the thatch on my house can no longer holds the rain waters.I am grateful to GiveDirectly for giving me hope again."

"I am an old father of 9 children. I am lucky that most of them are currently living independently. It has not been easy for me to bring up such a big family with no formal job. I have entirely depended on casual jobs and currently living on farming alone. I have lived in grass-thatched houses one after another since I could not afford to upgrade them. I lived and old one with its condition gets worse and worse each day. This cash to means new dawn in my family. I am planning to spend KES 25000 to build an iron-roofed house. I will no longer have to get stressed about the frequent repair like now. I will be collecting clean water for domestic use this reduce the struggle to get clean water. Thank you GiveDirectly for giving me a new life I had dreamt of for a long."

"We spent KES 15000 of our recent transfer on buying a water tank. We bought the water tank because we usually experience a prolonged dry season in our place and the river where we usually go to fetch water from is very far away. One gets tired of making long trips. With the water tank, we will be able to collect rainwater for household use during the dry season. We also bought three bags of maize at a total cost of KES 9600. We no longer had maize for our consumption. The little that we had harvested had finished. Other than that, we also bought some sofa sets at KES 7000. We decided to buy them because we didn't have enough chairs in our house. With the remaining transfer money, we used it in buying some utensils, some clothes, water containers, and we saved some that we plan to use in farming. We want to till land and plant maize. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly because we got the things that we didn't have before with their transfers."

"No. I have no new goals. Our house is not in a good condition. The roof is tarsh. Rats put holes all in the tarsh. During rainy days, it leaks. We can barely sleep during those days. We put tubs in our rooms to catch water. My goal has been to build a new house. I am excited for this program."
