How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My biggest concern before receiving the transfers was to ensure that I finally got the chance to settle the debt in tuition fee for my daughter and also look into renovating my house since it was quite old and almost looking as though it was going to collapse any moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I definitely praisethe job that Givedirectly has done so far back in the village, not only to me but also my neighbors and friends as well because it has elevated us in ways that we would have never imagined before and this has brought so much joy in our homes and has completely transitioned our lives for the better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfers, I immediately went ahead to settle some part of the debt that my daughter had for her high school studies and I ended up paying KES 10,000. I also proceeded and bought a new bed and mattress because I did not have one which cost me again KES 10,000. I also bought nineteen pieces of iron sheets that you could finally help me finalise on the roofing of my house which cost KES 19,000. As for the rest of the funds, I mostly used it on ensuring that my family and I always had a meal because it was quite a problem from time to time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 11 AM when I was just relaxing with my family when I heard a message tone from my mobile phone. I was a bit anxious and asked my son to check the contents. After going through it, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally received my first transfer as promised. I felt so happy together with my children and I can still remember we withdrew the cash and started planning on it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am now happier and in good health. Before GiveDirectly came into my life, I used to suffer a lot health-wise. Months ago, I was diagnosed with anemia and high blood pressure and the expenses were very high therefore we could not afford them. My spouse and I are very old without any jobs we have been depending on our children who are also casual laborers. This is evident that it would take time for me to get treated. On most of the days handling the house, chores were possible because of my condition. I have been going through lots of pains and I never thought this would come to an end anytime soon. This organization sent that is all I can say because if it were not for them, I don't think I would still be alive. I will always be grateful for what they did in my life and family which is comprised of six members.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on clearing a hospital bill of KES 23000. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and anemia a while ago but u did not have the required cash for the proper medication. I am happy that for now, I am doing quite well and I can do all the house chores unlike before. I later paid school fees of KES 10000 for my son who is in his second year in secondary school. He was always at home because of the issue of the huge arrears which has been a major challenge. Additionally, I bought building poles which I am intending to building a new house because the previous one was not in a good state at all. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying foodstuffs like maize flour, vegetables, fruits, milk, and when water.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this cash will ensure food security for my family. I depend upon my lastborn who is employed as a motorbike rider. The job is not yielding much bearing in mind my son also has his needs. Getting three meals a day is rare in my family. Receiving the GiveDirectly transfers will help in ending the hunger I have experienced for years. Besides, I suffer from hypertension. The condition demands close medical check up. I will save about KES 10 000 for my medical services.
What is the happiest part of your day?
With my current situation being happy is not guaranteed. The only source of my happiness is seeing my grandchildren waking up each morning with smiles. This was not the case five months ago. One of my grandchildren has been ever sick from unknown condition. It was after a family friend who took her to hospital when she was able to fully recover. At least we can now have peaceful nights
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The greatest challenge am facing is ill-health. Suffering from hypertension has drained most of my finance.I have not been able to seek better medication services since I do not have money. Three days ago, the blood pressure increased to a level of making me nose-bleed. It were not for a neighbour who took me to hospital I couldnot have lived to see this day.
