"The main challenge is food insecurity. We own a small piece of land that is not enough for us to farm crops that can last us a whole year. We practice subsistence farming mainly maize and beans, I work as a casual laborer in a nearby town where I was in people's shops and fetch water for hotels this earns me a little income of KES 200 on a good day. This is not sufficient to purchase foodstuffs for the very expensive marketing, especially with the high cost of living in the country."

"Availability of safe water for domestic use is the biggest challenge that I face at the moment. I live in a single grass thatched house and that means I cannot harvest rainwater even if it was to rain now. This has forced me to go to the river every other day to fetch. The pain of carrying water on my back from the river has caused me persistent backaches."

Juddy
received a $461 second payment.
"On receiving the second transfer, I spent KES 42000 on starting a retail business that is currently run by my husband in Nakuru town. Previously, he was working in the quarries around and the casual labor that was never consistent. I was happy when he suggested that I start my own first with the first transfer, and the second transfer came when I also wanted to see him Workington his job instead of the casual labor that he was used to. The proceeds are relatively good at the moment and even though he is barely some months old in the business, he is always happy with the progress as he makes better earnings compared to the work he used to do. With the remaining KES 10000, I was able to buy household goods that involved a piece of furniture, water containers, and also foodstuff that I keep replenishing anytime we exhaust what we have. Both businesses are now single great, and I am relieved of the stress we used to undergo to put food on the table."

Zainab
received a $477 second payment.
"Since I had constructed some rental houses using the first transfer, upon receiving the second I decided to buy and fix burglary doors to the houses. I used KES 30000.00 to buy three burglary doors for security purposes. Thereafter I used KES 20000.00 and applied for some water from the Kilifi Water and Sewage Company (KIWASCO). The presence of water at the rental houses will attract more tenants because most rental houses do not have sources."

Rebeccah
received a $477 second payment.
"I spent KES 23000 of my recent transfer on buying a heifer. I bought it so that it can help me in the future when it calves. I will be able to sell some of the milk and get income for meeting my needs. I had a cow before but I had to sell it when I was sick so that I could raise enough money for paying for my hospital bull. I also spent another KES 20000 on buying a water tank. I didn't have access to clean water and hence I decided to buy the water tank so that I could collect clean rainwater. I am also old and I am no longer able to go to the river which is very far to fetch water. I hence usually depend on my daughter-in-laws to fetch water for me. I am glad that it has rained and I now have water for my household use. With the remaining transfer amount, I used it on buying food and a wire mesh for fencing my compound. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your help."

"We have experienced one of the longest draughts in the history of this place taking longer than three years. This has dried nearly all the water sources and made it hard to get food as we have not been able to grow crops over that time. It has also changed our lives in the village and right now you need money to basically access anything. It stressful to imagine that you do not have any defined source of income or proper economic involvement when life is getting that expensive."
