Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to visit a relative in a nearby town. I only came to learn about the receipt of my initial transfer when I was about to call my husband, I can recall that I saw a Mpesa notification on my phone showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overjoyed, relieved and happy. I can recall that I called my husband and told him the good news and he too was equally happy and grateful.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I can comfortably sleep like a baby knowing that a heavy burden has been lifted off my back. This is because I was able to settle a debt. My husband and I can comfortably embark on other businesses knowing that I am debt-free. I am happy and grateful for the tremendous support that impacted my life amazing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the receipt of our transfer, my husband and I agreed that we would spend our transfer on paying a long-overdue land debt. Therefore we used KES 40,000 in paying the debt. I then used KES 5000 on paying school fees for my child who is in a nursery school. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes. My husband works as a shopkeeper and I used to work as a board teacher, though at the moment I took a maternity leave break. I was unable to pay back the debt due to financial constraints. I am glad and grateful for the support that enabled me to accomplish a lot in a short period.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I bought a 0.3-acre piece of land from my neighbor and I still owe him KES 40,000. As per our agreement, I was supposed to have finished paying the balance 3months ago. He has repeatedly threatened to sue me for breach of contract and this has constantly caused me sleepless nights. My husband who is the breadwinner of the family is a shopkeeper and earns KES 400 per day. This money caters for food and other basic needs like clothing. I plan to use KES 40000 to offset the balance and by so doing I will be at peace. Receiving this money means I will be in a position to clear the debt that I owe my neighbor and this will bring back the cordial relationship that we had in the beginning.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In January this year, I was blessed with a bouncy baby girl from a normal delivery. The joy of holding her in my arms is second to none and I am thankful to God for the blessings
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Availability of safe water for domestic use is the biggest challenge that I face at the moment. I live in a single grass thatched house and that means I cannot harvest rainwater even if it was to rain now. This has forced me to go to the river every other day to fetch. The pain of carrying water on my back from the river has caused me persistent backaches.
