"My life is different than it would have been, in that my living standards have improved because I used my first transfer to build a decent house for my family, I am in a motorcycle taxi business, I earn very little that I could not afford to build myself a house, I bought 8 goats with my second transfer, in addition to that I paid school fees for my 2 children who are in a secondary school, I am so happy and thankful for the project that changed our lives, it's my prayer that this good work should continue to empower other communities just the way we benefited."

"If I am qualified to receive this cash transfer, I will buy a motorcycle to use it for commercial purpose since I do not have any means of earning an income. I will also use the rest of the cash transfer to send my little daughter to school and start a business for my spouse."

"The main challenge for me here is to find passengers as a bike rider. Now, there is no good traffic going on. Besides the bike too, I sometimes make cassava farm to sell. But now there is no good price for cassava . As we speak I got cassava on my farm. But I am worried that if I dig it now to sell, I will not realise money to buy food and send my children to school when i take it to the Market." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"This money will go a long way in reducing most of the problems we face as a family. I earn money by operating a bicycle taxi business which usually brings in at most MWK500 per day since it's not my bicycle. My wife also goes going to nearby mountains to collect firewood and sell it here. This money will assist us in building a better house than the one we are in currently. We are also looking forward to have adequate fertilizer this year as the soil in our village is not suitable for good harvest without fertilizer. I also believe even food preparation by wife will be easier as we have very few utensils and other household items Last but not least is to buy my own bicycle too so that we increase the earnings from the taxi business. I am very thankful to be enrolled in this project." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"It was on a Saturday afternoon in October 2019 when my beloved wife complained of a mild headache. I brought her some painkillers from the canteen and she felt better after some hours. Later in the evening, she still complained about the headache and said she was feeling much pain. I called a motorcycle taxi rider who took us to Tenwek Mission Hospital. She was laid on a stretcher at the reception and before she could be inspected by a doctor she called out on my name then breathed her last. The passing on of my wife has been a great challenge that I have never come into terms with. She was my pillar, she supported me in payment of school fees and in taking care of the kids."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own 2 cows and 2 goats which I didn't have before, My husband work is very tiresome, carrying water on his back was hectic and it took a long time to deliver to his customers, the biggest difference now is that he can deliver on time thanks to the motorcycle that we bought, Not forgetting my business that is now picking up, this is still my main source of livelihood and I am indebted to GiveDirectly which enabled me to revive it. I am grateful for receiving my transfer that transformed my life into a better one."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have purchased a motorcycle. I used the motorcycle for taxi business. I have employed someone to ride it. I earns KES 300 per day. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a asset which could have taken quite some time. I save KES 100 and spent KES 200 on the basic needs of my family. I have also created an employment .The ride also get some amount per day. I feel sad happy. I used to do casual jobs and earns KES 200. I could wake up very early in the morning and back home late hours. I had no time to bond with my children. I had no time to work on my farm. Currently I no longer do casual jobs, I have devoted much of my time on my farm and to bond with my children. I have started horticulture farming. I do plant potatoes and vegetables. I know I would get enough food for the family after the harvest. I have hope that I will continue to save some money to buy another motorcycle taxi. This will enable me earn KES 600 per day. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"It was around 10 o'clock when I received a message notification on my phone. I was at the hospital waiting for my turn at the que as my daughter was ill. I became so happy upon realizing that GiveDirectly had sent me the promised money and I was eager to leave the hospital so that I would finally go and pay school fees for my son who was at home as he had been sent back home to collect fee arrears." "The biggest hardship we face here is food insecurity. It's approximately 13 years now since we last harvested maize. There was a maize disease called maize lethal necrosis disease that affected the crops. It is still there to date. So most of the time we buy food, sometimes they are expensive to meet. Our disposable income goes towards other competing needs and therefore we have no choice but to survive on indecent meals sometimes." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Receiving this money means that our family shall avoid the cost of acquiring milk since we shall buy a lactating cow. We usually spend 0.5 USD daily on purchasing milk for consumption. The relatively little daily income of about 3.5 USD from my motorcycle business is barely enough to sustain us. Hence, we have never afforded to buy a cow. If some of the transfer remains, we shall use it on purchasing a donkey for carrying water. A perennial river that we rely on for freshwater is situated about 3 kilometers away. Hence, having a donkey will relieve my wife of the tiresome task of carrying jerricans of water on her back daily." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
