"When GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I was already in the process of building a more permanent house for my family. I had completed the structure and the remaining part was to fix cealing and tiles. When I received my transfer, I decided to spend KES 48000 to complete it and paid for the labour. As a way of investing this money and have something that I will always use to remember GiveDirectly, I spent KES 5000 to purchase a goat for rearing." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Receiving this money means capital accumulation, good housing and self employment. I am planning to use a total of KES 20,000 to purchase 10 goats. This will make me a proud owner of 17 goats in total. Being a livestock keeper, I have seen how beneficial goats can be. The goats will act as a source of income for me. In 2 years time, the goats will have multiplied, when a problem arises that requires money ( hospital bills, school fees for my children),I will no longer be bothered, I will just sell some few goats to settle that particular problem. I will then use KES 20,000 to expand my house. I have a family of 3 children, 2 of my children are sleeping with their grand mother due to how small our house is. Once I expand it, it will able to comfortably host us all. I also have a small business of selling petrol to motorcycle operators here in the village. I am planning to use a total of KES 20,000 to build a separate structure for this particular business. Currently, I sell the petrol in small bottles and I store it in the house we sleep in with my family which is so dangerous. The money that will remain will go into our savings account."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that my house is decent and spacious. My children are also so happy that we have a lovely house. This was not possible before because I am a motorcycle taxi rider and my income was very little hence I could not afford to build a house, what I earn was only enough to buy food and other basic needs. I am happy that I was able to accomplish my goals within a short period. Thanks to GiveDirectly my living standards have been lifted to a higher level."

"This money means a lot to me and my family. We have been desiring to have a good house ever since we got married. My husband operates a bicycle taxi business which belongs to another person. He just makes sure to deliver MWK500 per day. On a good day, he makes that twice and the other part we use it at home for basic needs. I believe this money will enable us to have a better house with iron sheets as that's what makes one a respectable member of society. Living in a good house also reduces the burden of always changing grass and plastic sheets each year. The other part will go towards starting a business for my husband so that we can be having adequate food at home." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

""Many things have brought joy or happiness to me but there is one I can never forget. Some part of last month, I got a call from one of our political aspirant from my district. Her name is Hon. Annie. The call was to tell me that she has given me a motorcycle to help me run the town affairs. Even though it wasn't a new motorcycle, I appreciated it a lot.""
