"My mother is a window and she's been burning and selling charcoal to earn living ever since our father left us six years ago. It hasn't been easy for her as she has to provide basic needs for the six of us and pay school fees for four of us who are in school. Most of the the times, she thrives in debts and the last one year has not been easy for her because the charcoal business has not been doing well. Although I'm still in school, I have always wanted to start poultry farming business so that I can help my mother with the family responsibilities but financial incapability was the major stumbling block. Being enrolled in the program was a great opportunity for me to achieve my dream. I spend KES 1150 of my first transfer to buy three chicken for start up, KES 750 to clear my mother's debt and the balance to buy food. I'm happy that the transfers are helping me achieve my dream and help my mother with family responsibilities."

"I'm newly married not yet decided what I would want to do economically in the village, but I have always wanted to try out chicken business. I'm not exactly sure where the all season chicken market is and whether the traders who collect from the village offer good prices. When I get the money it will help me start an income generating venture around selling chicken. I want to keep the local breed that is somehow rare, expensive and marketable so that I would be able to make sales in this flooded market. Also there are normally big market during festive season and I can still cash in from that. It will make me extremely happy if I manage to get this off the ground."

"I plan to buy 3 goats, I would love to increase my livestock by buying few chicken, I believe I can get more income through resell of the animals. I don't have any school going children, so I have enough time to take care of them and also it they will keep me busy instead of just sitting down. I previously had some few cows that were doing fine untill the drought period came in, so I'm still motivated to start again."

"The KES 3000 received from GiveDirectly really played a huge role. I was in school pursuing my high school studies. Dad is blind and unable to work whilst mum is the breadwinner for our family and this has been quite a challenge for her to also pay up my school fees. However, lack of enough capital has hindered me from realizing this dream and this is why receiving these transfers will be a boost to my earnings from the business which will enable me to kick off the project."
