How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the upcoming year and the years that follow, my primary objective is to undertake a comprehensive renovation of my home. The current house which was built using mud, lacks the essential attributes of durability and stability. Even a single instance of rainfall results in weakened walls. To rectify this, I am determined to rebuild my house using robust bricks and reliable cement. To materialize this ambition, I have resolved to consistently set aside $20 from each transfer. This savings strategy is a sustained effort, aimed at accumulating sufficient funds to cover the expenses of acquiring bricks, cement, and the associated labor costs. Through this endeavor, my aspiration is to attain a dignified and well-constructed dwelling that can confidently withstand even the harshest of rainfalls. This transformation will alleviate my concerns and anxieties about the impact of adverse weather conditions on my home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since last year, my commitment has been to set aside a portion of my transfers each month, with the specific aim of renovating my house. The current state of my home is less than ideal, as it was constructed using mud, rendering it structurally unstable. To address this issue and ensure a lasting solution, I intend to reconstruct the house using durable building stones. To fulfill this objective, I've been contributing $20 to our local savings group regularly. The purpose of accumulating these funds is to eventually purchase the necessary materials in bulk, once I've amassed a sufficient amount. In addition to strengthening the structure with stones, my plans also involve installing a proper floor. This upgrade is long overdue and will relieve me of the inconvenience of living in a constantly dusty environment. strengthening. In addition to saving, I spent the remaining amount mainly on buying foodstuffs, such as a bale of maize flour. By doing so, my family and I have been able to enjoy three meals daily. It's worth noting that we've consistently had an ample food supply whenever I received funds, ensuring the well-being and harmony of my household.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am grateful to have built a concrete wall around my house courtesy of Give Directly's transfer. The task was costly and I am not sure if I could have done it were it not for the transfers. My focus right now is to install concrete pillars at the corner walls of the structure to strengthen it more to endure adverse weather conditions. I plan to continue saving $15 from each cash transfer to obtain the construction materials and compensate someone to do the job.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I enrolled in the cash program, I planned to renovate my house, whose mud walls were damaged over time. I am happy that the previous transfers allowed me to construct a reinforcement concrete pillar around the walls of the house. However, I also want to reinforce the structure’s corner walls with pillars as well to enhance its stability. To accomplish this, I always set aside $15 from each transfer to buy more building materials like cement and bricks. Also, I spent the remaining $19 on maize flour as the household had run out of food that morning. Am glad that my family has never run out of food ever since.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I first enrolled, I have focused primarily on strengthening the walls of my home. The one I now possess is constructed of mud, however it has numerous cracks. I wish to convert the existing wall to bricks because the roof is in good shape. The current drought, which has raised the price of food, is the main obstacle to achieving this. I have been setting aside $10 every month in a savings account to reach the goal, and I plan to continue doing so for the next two years. By then, I'll have raised enough cash to make it possible for the brick wall to be built. It won't need ongoing maintenance, which is expensive, stressful, and time-consuming, especially given that I'm 73 years old. In addition, I am completely alone and have no one to help me since my husband passed away seven years ago.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfers were just recently sent out and I haven't necessarily put them much to use yet. I only got the chance to spend KES 400 by purchasing two packets of maize flour because I barely had any food left in my house. I plan on depositing KES 2,000 to my savings account and then proceed to spend the remaining balance of KES 1,000 on nutrition especially because it is quite a persistent challenge became the village.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization does well by helping the needy in the society. Through the monthly unconditional transfers, I buy food and also save enough to build my house well. I recommend that the organization increase the monthly stipend so that we can cope with the notable increase in essential commodities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My dilapidated house is nearly collapsing because of the weak materials used in building it. The walls of the house are made of mud. Large cracks have formed on the walls, making it unsafe to live in the house. I save KES 2000 from the KES 3000 I get from every transfer. The primary aim is to save enough money to buy building stones, sand and cement. I plan building pillars that will strengthen the house and make it safe to live in. Besides saving KES 2000, I bought food worth KES 1000. Failure to receiving rains has forced me to buy food from the shop at very high prices because the farm is no longer productive. I bought two packets of 2kg maize flour at KES 500, 1 kg of beans at 120, 1 kg of sugar at KES 230 and soap at KES 150.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was sitting under the shade of a tree, away from the midday sun. My granddaughter informed me she had received her transfer. I handed her my phone to check if I had received too. She broke the good news that I had received my transfer a few minutes past 12 noon. I was very excited and could not believe it I had received the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have always wanted to build a suitable house for myself but could not due to lack of finances. Having received my transfer and saving the money to repair my house is an enormous difference in my life. I never imagined that I will receive financial aid that will help me build a magnificent house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house is in a dilapidated condition for the last three years. I have lived in fear that one day the house may collapse and cause serious harm to my body. I no longer work because of old age and fully depend on financial support from a son who works in Mombasa town. Upon receiving my first transfer, I saved KES 2500 in a” Chama” to save enough to buy building materials, e.g. sand, cement and stones. I want to repair the walls which are made of mud and full of cracks. Building a stoned wall house will make the house strong and last long. Besides saving the money, I bought food with the remaining KES 500 because I had nothing left to eat.
