"I have a family of nine members. I am a farmer doing both crop and livestock farming. It has been three years now without our village. This has caused drought and famine. I lost ten cows last year and that was the remaining source of income for the family. My husband and I were all farming. Since we lost our cows, we have had difficulties getting food for the family. The family takes on one meal per day. My children have grown very weak due to lack of food. I feel very pathetic for my family condition."

"Although my family of 6 struggles financially, I am glad that we have never lacked what to eat. Young children still need some nutrient for their development and milk is a constituent. I was excited when my father gave me a dairy cow to provide milk for my children. Luckily, I have spent not a pound on purchasing milk, which saves a lot for other household use. The KES 2000 my husband Peter, earns from casual jobs monthly has been used towards education for my 2 children in school."

"I have been doing casual jobs such as weeding on people's farms to earn a living. This job is energy-draining and it pays as little as KES 100 a day. At 64 years of age, I feel like putting a stop to such work and switching to another that befits an old woman like myself. I have the desire to buy a dairy cow that will produce 5-6 liters a day which I will sell locally at KES 60 for every liter. This will earn me better and restore the dignity that I have lost by doing odd jobs"

"In my opinion GiveDirectly does very well by giving support in form of cash. This gives everyone a chance to choose how well to spend the money. Unlike other organizations that comes with material support, GiveDirectly comes with cash and does not force anyone to spend the money in a particular way. Seeing how every household in my family now owns a dairy cow among other things that people have done is so fulfilling. I d on not think there is any other better way GiveDirectly could have done us proud except to give us support unconditionally and to give us cash for that matter."

"When we received our first transfer, we made a decision with my husband to buy a dairy cow and bring to an end the endless purchase of milk. Having bought one, we have felt the relief that it has brought to us as a family. With the 2 litres that we get from it, we no longer have to buy milk and this has saved us a lot. It is for this reason that we now have a new goal of buying an additional dairy cow. This we plan to do using proceeds from our farming. The drought is too much already but we are very optimistic that the rains will come soon and save the crops in our farms from drying up. Once we have our harvest in February next year, then we will be able to sell them and buy an additional dairy cow. This additional dairy shall see us pay school fees and meet other family's needs with much ease. We shall no longer rely entirely on odd casual jobs and crop farming like we are currently doing. This project shall see our three children go through their education journey without much difficulties or challenges."

"Yes, the new goal that I have at the moment is to boost the goat rearing that I started with the transfers by purchasing more goats. This would be something that I will be relying upon in the future when I face any financial needs. Also, the plan is to sell them when they multiply to purchase a dairy cow that would ensure a steady supply of milk for the family. Similarly, I would sell them to the neighbors to earn an income daily that would support some of the essential needs."

"For the past few years, I have been interested in establishing livestock farming in order to increase the profitable production of milk. This was not possible due to a lack of resources to invest in this idea. I am grateful that after receiving the GiveDirectly transfers; I was able to purchase a dairy cow, which I am hopeful will deliver on this goal. At the moment, my new goal is to expand the grazing fields and plant more feeds for my current farm's four dairy cows. When compared to outsourcing feeds, this will simplify the feeding process and reduce production costs."

"The moment I received my second transfer, I prioritised settling a debt that had accumulated for a while, where I used $120. I am so happy and relieved that it lifted a heavy burden off my back, thus I am debt free. Secondly, I purchased a dairy cow worth $300 which will make me cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. It was not easy before, due to financial constraints. I depend on selling recharge cards to earn a livelihood. I am married and blessed with a child. I am so grateful for the support that has lifted my living standards."

"I am very grateful for the support that brought so much happiness to my life. It has uplifted my life tremendously. I was able to buy a dairy cow which is going to improve the health of my children and also bring in an income. Throughout my interaction with the program, I did not experience any loopholes."

"Throughout, I have concentrated on livestock raising. Before my recent transfer, I had ten goats, one sheep, and six cows. However, because I do not have any other options for work, I spent $30 on another goat. This has increased the size of my flock, and I am always happy to look after them. It reminds me of the kindness shown to us by GiveDirectly. I prefer livestock because they are valuable, and I can sell them for a profit. I intend to sell some of them when I need to raise school fees for my three school-age children, Pili, Katana, and Kitsao."
