How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I aspire to see my children through a college education. With this, it will assure me that they would have a brighter future. I don't have a stable source of income at the moment, but I am trusting God for a way out to achieve this dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am very grateful for the support that brought so much happiness to my life. It has uplifted my life tremendously. I was able to buy a dairy cow which is going to improve the health of my children and also bring in an income. Throughout my interaction with the program, I did not experience any loopholes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, my husband and I thought of purchasing a dairy cow to boost my business and also cut down on the cost of buying milk. Therefore, we spent $300 on the dairy cow. Secondly, I paid the school fees arrears of $200 for my children. I was not able to achieve all this due to financial constraints since I depend on selling milk on a small scale which is not stable since I work as a consistent farmer. Together, we are blessed with four children who are all in school. Receiving this money is the best thing that happened to me, thus I am grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was at home busy preparing an evening meal for my family when I suddenly heard my phone ringing. Upon checking my phone, I saw a message notification showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was so excited and happy because I knew that I would be able to accomplish my dreams in a short time. We celebrated for the better part of the evening and then embarked on planning how we would utilise our transfers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I was able to build a decent house for my family. I had the dream before but I was unable to execute the plan due to financial constraints. I am happy that finally my children and I have a decent and spacious house to ourselves. We will no longer be forced to share a room. I am forever indebted for the aid that I got from GiveDirectly which lifted my life tremendously.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Building a decent house for my family has been the biggest dream that I have had in a long time. This is because I used to live in a small house together with my five children, I am a single mother and I depend on selling milk locally in earning an income. Therefore building a decent and bigger house was not easy due to unreliable sources of income. Upon receiving my second transfer, I thought of building a decent house for my family where I used KES 30,000. Additionally, I paid school fees for my two children worth KES 10,000 and finally used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much happiness in our lives by lifting our living standards amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
After I separated from my husband ten years ago, I bought a piece of land and build a temporary one-roomed house. I raise my five children single-handedly and providing all their basic needs for them has not been easy because two of my daughters are in secondary school. Receiving this money will enable me to build a decent three-roomed house which will be spacious enough to accommodate visitors and also my daughters will have their bedroom. This will ensure privacy compared to now when we share a sleeping area that acts as the kitchen. I am happy because we will live comfortably and it will make me proud of myself. The rest of the transfers will go into paying for school fees and purchasing a dairy cow to supplement my income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Three months ago, I bought a point of land from the savings I got from table banking. Owning this has increased the area that I farm hence increase in farm output. At the same time, when I buy a cow I will have enough space to build a cow-shed and plant livestock feeds without straining.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I buy and sell milk to earn a living. The income I earn is not reliable and consistent due to factors such as a lack of rain which may reduce milk production from farmers directly decreasing my profits. As a result of this, I am forced to supplement by doing casual jobs to earn extra money which I consider strenuous.
