"Hunger is the biggest challenge in my house. I have 2 boys who are in university and 2 in their 4th year secondary school. Raising school fees for my children and at the same time feeding my family is a big challenge to me .I spend many days without food in my house. I depend on charcoal burning business which does not permanently sustain the needs of my house. Getting water for my house is also a bigger challenge because all the water pans we used to depend on dried up and now I buy water from motorcycle water venders which is too expensive to me. 1 jerican of water cost 100 KES which is too expensive to afford ."

"My husband and I work as charcoal burners. My husband sells the charcoal in Mariakani. He used to carry the sacks with a bicycle. Cycling for more than 30 km was very tedious for him. Six months ago, we acquired a motorcycle that we are still paying on higher purchase basis. This gave me so much joy because transporting the charcoal has been very simple lately."

"What I plan to do with the cash is to go back to school and build a 2 room house for my spouse and me. Seeing my peers furthering their education makes me feel devastated and consider myself a failure. Furthermore, my spouse and I are currently homeless because of the lack of money to build a house of our own. Receiving this cash will allow us to build a house which I feel will add value to us as a family." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Receiving this money means spacious house for my family. This is because I am now sharing a one bedroom house with my five children which does not offer privacy. I am planning to spend KES 30,000 to build a bigger house. I will also utilize the remaining transfers to pay school fees for my daughter who is in grade two as well as buy five goats which do well in our area. I will use the second transfers to pay deposit for a motorcycle. Besides the balance will go to boosting my charcoal business."

"I have always wanted to be a commercial poultry farmer but I have not realized the dream because of a lack of finances to start it off. My husband is a motorcycle rider, earning at most KES 500 a day, which is not enough to meet the needs of our family of three. With this money, I plan to construct a poultry house, fence it off, buy improved chicks and feeds. It will cost me approximately KES 20,000. Receiving this money means I'll be able to earn income through the sale of eggs and chicken, therefore, meeting my family's needs. I will be so happy to see this dream come true. For the rest of the amount, I plan to purchase a dairy cow as we do not own any at the moment." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I live with my sons since my husband left and one of them unfortunately broke his leg so he barely moves, meanwhile drives a motorcycle as taxi but since he does not own it he has to work in shifts with some of his friends so at times he comes back home with something and sometime he does not. Therefore the money enabled me to also lend a hand with the house responsibilities and not always rely on the children since there is another source of income."

"My first born was born with deformit , I have been having rough time growing her up because she cannot care for herself despite that she is 16 years old. Getting food for my family is also a big problem to me and my husband because we depend on charcoal burning business in order to put food on the table. There is a water scarcity of which it has become a disaster in our area. All water pans have dried up and we depend on buying water from motorcycle operators which is very expensive. One jerican costs 100 KES which is too expensive to me and sometimes we go to bed hungry because of luck of both water and food."

"I grew up in abject poverty as a young boy in this village. I have not known what a good or smooth is like ever since I was born. My parents were peasant farmers and their income was not sufficient to take me and my siblings to school. This contributed to the continuation of this trend of poverty from my parents to my family. My children at the moment have all dropped out of school and are out in town trying out casual jobs. This is something that saddens me a lot but I have no control over it. I am also still struggling at my age to do motorcycle business and at my age, it wearies me a lot. I get sick most of the time because of the occupational risks that come with riding a motorcycle for long. I desire to settle down and focus on livestock keeping at the moment since old age also is approaching when I will not be able to do a lot I will therefore spend these transfers to purchase livestock which will be more like a long-term investment for me. I will stay at home and manage these livestock."
