"I work casual jobs, fetch water for people, wash clothes or houses anything I find I do. This kind of livelihood is not reliable and most days I am at home with no money to address my needs. I am a single parent of one child in nursery school. As I parent I worry about her upkeep and would wish to always have money to address any want she might have."

"Any day I get to eat cornmeal mush(ugali) with beans is the best. I sleep peacefully and with no migraine. This may happen once a week because the rest of the days I might just take porridge and sleep or just take ugali with salty water."

"Receiving this money will mean an end to the water problem that I face. We have water shortages in our area and the quality of water that we use is low because we fetch water from a river nearby. The water is not good for drinking and cooking but I use it because I do not have another option. I plan to buy a water tank so that I can store rainwater during the rainy season for household use. Once I have settled this issue, I plan on completing my house with the rest of the transfers because I have built until halfway when my resources depleted."

"At my age, I still hawk different goods like sweets, toothbrushes, water, etc for a living. I am so tired and weary at the end of the day and that makes me very sad. I am also not as productive at work because I cannot keep up with all the walking or running around."

"The change in terms of expenses incurred on buying water daily is the biggest difference have so far experienced after receiving payment from Give directly. The water tank is the best thing that happened to us, especially with the heavy rains which we have had enough for our household activities and at least sell to our neighbors at KES 10 per 20ltrs jerrican."

"My family( husband and six children) have been living in a tiny muddy single room. We have all desired to have a bigger permanent house but since we all depend on my husband who is a painter, he was not in a position to build us a better house because of other family responsibilities. living in a high poverty level region where most people build muddy houses, he rarely gets jobs and when he does, the little that he earns is only enough to provide basic needs and pay school fees. When our household was enrolled in the program, our plan was to build a permanent house. I spend, KES 49,500 to build a permanent two rooms house, KES 3600 to buy two bundles of maize floor, KES 1700 to buy a water tank and KES 3500 to buy my husband a phone."

"My family solely depend on my husband who is the bread winner. I wouldn't say we have lived the best of our lives because being a mason, he earns averagely KES 4000 per month since construction jobs are seasonal. it's became difficult to find a job during this drought period due to scarcity of water and due to financial constraints, we accumulated huge school fees balance and our children were not allowed to move to the next class without clearing it. I spend KES 9000 of my first transfer to clear the fees balance and our child were allowed to move to the next class. I spend the balance to buy household items such as utensils and food and I'm glad that we now have enough to take us through the month."

"It was around 8:30 Am I was doing the dishes. I had left my phone in the house when I went back to check there was a message confirming that I have received some money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money. It was one of the happiest days of my life. When I informed my family members everyone was so happy and we celebrated. I stayed for two days before I went to withdraw the money. I knew I would fulfill my dream of owning a water tank. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our standard of living."
