How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which is to start a business (selling clothes) in neighbouring towns. I trust that this is the only business that I can perfectly run since I already had an experience whereby I had been employed by a friend and paid on commission. Also, the competition is not that stiff which makes me believe that the business shall thrive so well. I will therefore be able to fend for my family without struggling like before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing so well not only in my village but also in the entire region. The plan of offering us the unconditional transfer was the best idea and a unique one. This has never happened in my life before from the experience I have had with other organisations. I do not see anything that they need to change for now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend part of my second transfer on buying iron sheets, nails, timber, and the labour charges which cost a total of KES 30000. I had aspired to construct a two-roomed permanent house because the initial one was a small muddy hut. It could hardly accommodate all my five family members which forced them to seek shelter at my relative's houses. This has been the toughest time of our lives because most of our relatives were not even accommodative at all. My children were like a burden to them, as a parent this frustrated me a lot and prayed to God to see me through so that I can be able to transform my life. It now feels like a miracle to me because I never expected it to happen so fast and soon. I will forever be grateful to God for sending GiveDirectly into my life and rescuing us. I am now sheltering comfortably with all my family members without any challenges like before. Additionally, I bought a bed and a mattress at a total of KES 11500. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I used to sleep in the traditional bed which was made of ropes. I used to experience sleepless nights due to the pains that I have been undergoing for all that long. With the remaining amount, I had to buy foodstuff for my family which took us almost three weeks. My children are now active in school because we have been taking at least two meals a day unlike before whereby we would even sometimes be forced to borrow from neighbours.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had left my phone home when I went to fetch water far away from because I could have easily loose it. When I got back home, I switched on my phone and a message popped up. Upon opening it, I found out that it was the cash transfer message and I jumped severally out of excitement. I was so thankful to God and GiveDirectly for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Previously, my children were sleeping in a very uncomfortable bed with a torn mattress. After buying another bed and mattress when I received the transfers, I was able to give them the one that I was sleeping on which was fairly new. They now sleep comfortably and enjoy their nights.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a housewife and a mother of two. I have been depending on my husband who works as a butcher to provide for us. Although he has been trying to give us a better life, it has not been the best that everyone could want. We have been living in a squeezed single room and we don't have a better beddings because with the salary of KES 4000 that my husband earns, it couldn't manage to build a house. When I was enrolled in the program, my goals were to build a house, clear debts that I had accumulated and household items. I spend KES 27,700 of my first transfer to buy concrete blocks, KES 15000 to clear debts that I had and KES 12000 to buy bed and mattress to replace the old one that I had. I'm looking forward to build a house once I receive my next transfer and I can't wait to own a person house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is out of condition and very small. Being in a polygamous setting, the house is congested. I do not get the privacy I am required to have. Receiving this money means a decent life and privacy. I am planning to expand this house from 2 rooms to 4 rooms. With the bigger house, we shall no longer be overcrowded. Approximately, the whole construction cost will be 35,000 KES. When the children have their rooms, there will be an assurance of dignity and self respect.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Celebrating Christmas day and new year's day was my happiest moment. All the family members were around and we had so much fun.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food shortage is the problem I am currently facing. Before, my husband used to provide for me as he was working in Mombasa as a butcher. Last year October, he was sacked, and that marked the inception of our problems. He currently depends on casual work at construction sites which earns him 500 KES on a good day. These kinds of occupations are inconsistent. Sometimes he can go for a whole week without an income. This leaves us struggling to buy food.
